    Reading the text at the beginning given the first medals were awarded three years after the Emergency and the DF would have been vastly reduced in the interim am I to assume that those who had moved on from the DF had their medals awarded by post/

    Bit undignified?

    I do know in the late 80's early 90s thousands of these medals remained unclaimed and were sent for scrapping.

              The DMP still exists. Now known as the DMA.

                  Looks kind of like a red cross?

                  But normally a NS MO has red between the stripes and a star

                    After the creation of the Irish Free State, the DMP became known as "Políní Átha Cliath" (Police of Dublin) from 1922–1925, after which the force ceased to exist as a separate entity, and was absorbed into the Garda Síochána (Guardians of the Peace).[4] Its last Commissioner was W.R.E. Murphy. "Dublin Metropolitan" is today a geographic region of the Garda Síochána's command structure.

                    Possibly the police are Dun Laoghaire Harbour Police or members of the Gardaí but definitely not members of the DMP.

                    Dun Laoghaire Harbour Police
                    The electronic Irish Statute Book (eISB) comprises the Acts of the Oireachtas (Parliament), Statutory Instruments, Legislation Directory, Constitution and a limited number of pre-1922 Acts.

                        • I'll ask my Grandfather, he was based in Dublin in the 50's to see if he had a helmet or not
                          What are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.

                          • Helmet, closed collar, and uniform worn at all times, with an armband to show whether the member was on duty or not.
                            The Helmets were withdrawn in 1952. Later versions did not have the "ball" atop.

                            • Uniform worn at all times?
                              'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
                              'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
                              Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
                              He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.
