"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

    • i take it that now that ONH have cracked the nut of being able to attend the Cambrian Patrol - they will be a regular feature from now on?

      would be rude not to.

The reports in the Defence Forces Magazine, An Cosantoir, are very positive towards the participation. Now that the seal has been broken, and there was no blushes, it will be easier for other units to participate next year, should operational tempo allow it.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

We might even hope for a Reserve feature one day

it should be an easy sell - we allow Air Cadet teams to take part...

they are 16yo's in a youth club sponsored by the RAF - if you don't give them an absolute spanking (metaphorically speaking m'lud...), the DOF would have every right to not just to disband the reserve element, but to shoot you all, sell your remains for pet food, and charge your families for the bullets and barrel wear!

Have you any experience with the RDF? :D
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

that is good news, it's a great experience and something to really look forward to and focus on whilst honing good skills and putting them to the test.

only good can come of this, and i look forward to seeing ONH on the scoreboard annually.

Being ex-ACF myself, I have often thought that the Army Cadets were better organised than the RDF.

At least the ACF knew they weren't a necessary part of the country's military framework and so would make the training experience as stimulating and challenging as possible to keep things interesting. We'd often train with the TA, acting as enemy/casualties etc for their exercises, and I even got to go overseas with the ACF on a training exercise (Germany for 10 days hosted by the ARRC in Rheindahlen).

Once the big deployments are done and everyone is home, can you see the Reserve taking as big of a role in these small training deployments? I would have thought these will be the preserve of the Regs? Unless it needs specialist input like Field Hospital staff, Comms specialists etc?

i went there with the ATC! - i bought my first ever stable belt from the NAAFI at Rheindahlen. i did camps at RAF Wildenrath, RAF Gutersloh and RAF Akrotiri, and visited RNoAF Bodo during a NATO exercise - t'was fcuking ace!

*stirring mode: in the cadets i did a proper live fire exercise at Sennybridge - does the RDF do that?

Soon to change with the RDF being expected to follow the PDF range tables INCLUDING Stages 4+5(Live field firing)
