I'll tell you a real reason why, that goes beyond anything related to the use of manpower to run such an endeavour.
Training children isn't the same as training adults. You've to deal with coaching movement skills, correcting movement patterns as children grow, along with a multitude of other issues. PTI's simply aren't educated or qualified to do it.
You may well get fitter schoolchildren but you'll almost certainly have them moving poorly, doing both the PTI's and schoolchildren a massive disservice.
There's far more things you could add onto the PTI Course that's actually relevant to training soldiers before you go near Growth, Movement and Development.
The DF training schoolchildren was a nice sounding idea, by people who had no idea what they were talking about.
I know it sounds like a nice idea, I understand why the DF don't want to do it. I also understand why trained soldiers don't want to do it. I wouldn't advocate the DF doing it any way. However, I only foresee the future of the DF as an organisation that will get smaller and smaller.
The UN missions that we go on will get smaller and and smaller because generally they seek risk adverse missions.
We only have 9000 in the DF now, that number was come up with, the number of duties that we do. The cash escorts are gone, the Department of Defence will now decrease the number of soldiers, because they will demonstrate that the Irish state doesn't actually need that many soldiers. The DF will be cut to maybe somewhere around 7000.
All that I was advocating is that the DF will have to think outside the box, come up with schemes that while might not make much military sense, but might mean something to our society as whole.
MOD: Back to the topic of the thread please, there are many threads that cover the role of the DF. The one on the white paper would be a more suitable thread for this conversation
Whos in the current jobs then and how long have they left to run ?
COS O'Boyle
ACOS
DCOS/SP Mellet
DCOS/OPS Brennan
NS
AC
2 Bde Beary
1 Bde
DFTC - vacant unless I miss my guess or was it announced. O Giollain stood down just recently
I heard rumours about the NS job being up for grabs shortly. The pieces on the chess board are being positioned to provide continuity during the implementation of the White Paper.
I am genuinely surprised at the DCOS appointment. Great news though.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.
The ACOS doesn't have long to go (end of year I think). The COS is entering pre-retirement phase. So basically at the moment there are 2 Brig Gens up for grabs and a COS, DCOS and one or 2 Brig Gens up within 6 months.

COS is due to retire in September, I believe.
And yes, GOC DFTC retired on Thurs 28 May, so unless a successor has been appointed, EO DFTC is presumably acting GOC? Maybe it was being held off until the DCOS (Sp) position was filled. That being the case, two Cols (or Capt (NS)) should be getting good news envelopes shortly
