I read also that his late father was a Flight Sergeant in the Air Corps. This should further improve the intra-df cooperation.

Had the absolute pleasure of meeting Rear Admiral Mellet recently. I can see where the comparison's with Lt Gen Earley came from.

    Very impressed.

Hopefully but no guarantee, Dermot Earley was DCOS for only 4 months

Yes but all ahead of him were due to retire. By my calculations, R/Adm Mellett is only in his mid to late 50s, with mandatory retirement age a long way off. There are few others in the general staff who are more junior to him in age.

Infantry Corps - An Lámh Comhrac

"Let us be clear about three facts:First of all.All battles and all wars are won in the end by the Infantryman.Secondly the Infantryman bears the brunt of the fighting, his casualties are heavier and he suffers greater extremes of fatigue and discomfort than the other arms.Thirdly, the art of the Infantryman is less stereotyped and harder to acquire than that of any other arm".

Lt Gen O'Boyle is due to retire in September I believe, he's keeping the CoS chair warm for Maj Gen Finn.

I doubt that greatly. R/Adm Mellett after all, Started his military career in 11 Cav. He has made it his business to get to know anyone who has been on the C&S course since about 2005. He keeps his ears open to what people at that level are thinking. Since he took over as D/CoS has there been any difference to how his end of the operation is run, in favour of the NS, indeed, given that the retiring other DCOS is Air Corps I don't see them to be getting any special favour either.

Face it. We are an Island with a short but relatively secure land border with a friendly on the other side of it. There is three arms to the Defence force. Logic dictates that the distribution should be less 6:1:1 and more 4:2:2, if not even 3:3:3. Generals don't decide policy though. They just implement it.

    Lt Gen O'Boyle is 62
    Maj Gen Finn is 61
    Maj Gen James is 58
Rear Admiral Mellett (can't find his age)

All ages are from military.ie and the age they have/are turning this year.

Who will slot into D/COS Ops now or D/COS support if the Admiral moves sideways?

Probably one of the existing Brig Generals currently serving, I would say - one of GOC DFTC, 1 Bde, 2 Bde or ACOS?

I reckon it will be Brig Gen Campbell (ACOS)

GOC 1 Bde Brig Gen Brennan to get DCOS SP when Vice Admiral Mellet takes the top job....
