The net vessel should be named LE 2 Bn
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***

Is there a ship naming dept in the NS,

Who comes up with and approves the names

The initial 3 corvettes were named under an Army order.

Traditionally the Chief or Minister named them. check on the names of the previous Ministers daughters and hey presto bing bang boom. the only variation was Eithne who was named after the Chiefs favourite barmaid when he served with the 27th on the border....

          tell me I'm wrong!

For the last 2 vessels there was a competition for school children.

Its probably because HBL not titled Fort George etc that the usual practise to change names did not arise.

That isn't true. Only Roisin was named from a School competition.

                    You are wrong.
P32 was supposed to be named after "someone's" daughter. The name remained on the list until P52. His other daughters name has not yet been used.

                      Incorrect, it was Niamh.

Roisin was named by then Minister For Defence Michael Smith, after Roisin Dubh from Celtic Mythology.

The late Lt Cdr Sean O'Brien had an input into ship naming.

                        Like IÉ and NIR locomotives?

The entire 201 class is named after Irish rivers, with the IÉ locomotives carrying two nameplates, one in Irish and one in English, on each side of the locomotive. 8208 and 209 are owned by Northern Ireland Railways and they carry English language only nameplates. The nameplates are trapezium shaped, with the names in upper case.

I know you would, like myself, prefer to be with our comrades who have already fallen in the fight - we, too, should rather die in this glorious struggle than submit to the enemy." Volunteer Captain Patrick Holahan to 58 of his men at North Brunswick Street, the last group of the Four Courts Garrison to surrender, Sunday 30 April 1916.

                        • I heard a yarn that the name USS bill clinton has been reserved for a waste disposal ship, such is the love he inspired with the US navy, so maybe there is a use for adamns, mcGUNess, ect.

Why the lower case e for the name of our country. It is such sloppiness that caused many to think that our ships are French.

On reflection the idea is a good one. With the political divisions is this country, some dating from the civil war, naming ships after rivers and mountains makes sense.

Not if you call one of the ships after the River SUCK
