Why does a commercial sailing event need a guard ship, provided at public expense? James Joyce was a dilettante who wrote unreadable books and kept his family in a state of constant poverty. hardly a recommendation for immortality as the name of a ship.

For the same reason that military aircraft take part in civilian airshows .
Not all that unique,RN has used female classic names such as Phoebe,Hermione,Penelope etc.Always a risk of current system being hijacked by failing politicians to call units after wags etc, maybe a new format is now timely.
Those are all classic Greek names. That is a different tradition again...expropriation of the history of others!

It gets badly needed exposure for the navy. The navy does most of its work over the western horizon and needs all the publicity it can get. In order to let the taxpayer see our navy it has to be at events like this.

Indeed, the same reason the Garda Boat and the customs cutter spent the week in Galway during events.
Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.
There's a difference between needing the ear of a sympathetic Dept of Finance and touting for attention at a commercial event. If any of the State services feel the need to tout for attention in public, then they are already in trouble. I'd be impressed if the sponsors paid for the NS and the other State services to attend................................. The NS is already a well-exposed and , as far as I can tell, publicly well-regarded organisation...... Customs cutter attending? Why? I doubt if they actually checked anyone on the day....As for military aircraft attending airshows, sometimes it's valid as public flag-waving but other times, it's just attention-whoring and unjustifiable jollies..........I'm glad Galway made a ton of money and everyone had a good time but I hope it hasn't squandered a chunk of an already-tight Naval budget.
Why not re-use the names we've already issued!!!??? If Emer Eithne etc are replaced, just re-use the name!? Same as they do in UK and US?
"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."
"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

Forgot to mention the value for crew morale of a few hours in Galway

What other countries provided guard ships to the racers as they sailed the race.According to ais the Aisling followed the racers from France to the SW coast and the Niamh was anchored in Galway Bay awaiting the flotilla.3 CG units met the flotilla just off the Aran Isles. The NS have prev deployed units to escort the Tall Ships so nothing new this time.

Cannot answer for the Volvo but other navies have provided guardships for the Tallships. It's another tradition. Please let's not tear it down.
