and the S92 doesn't suffer from the same problem???

It is rotors running as there is no "droop" in the blades that you would see when the aircraft is shut down & if you look at the blade directly above the cabin you can see there is some blur on the blade which indicates it is running, its just the way the picture was taken (settings).

The S92 has bigger tyres and is designed for miltary or hard civil tasks from day 1; the 139 is a millionaire's runabout and is not, which is why Agusta have considerably modified every successor "military" helicopter not to be a millionaire's runabout, with puny tyres designed for hard pads. The fuel burn is considerable when an aircraft with retractable gear has to fly with it's gear extended and draggy skis fitted, so it reduce the aircraft's utility.

The AW-139's are not suitable for the job and should be replaced with something that is, 'doubt if I'll see it in my lifetime all the same...

              From Facebook.
              Cross-border tasking last week.

Late Friday evening we received a call about a need for a critical piece of life-saving equipment in Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. Unfortunately the only one available was in University Hospital Galway.

In stepped #302Squadron, and two pilots and a crewman flew a H-135 helicopter to collect the equipment, which was driven by An Garda Síochána to Athlone Barracks, and bring it to Belfast for collection.

The Airbus Helicopters H135 is the smaller of our two types; however it is highly flexible, and capable of getting airborne in seconds from tasking. The total time from launching the mission to the delivery of the equipment was just under 2 hours.

Way back when, they wanted the Bo105, because they saw that Irish Helis had them and loved them and the Donners were jealous but the DoD was immovable...and now the wheel has turned full circle and they are flying grandson of Bolkow, complete with hatchback ;-)

Defence Forces deliver first Covid vaccines to islands

The Defence Forces have delivered the first consignment of Covid-19 vaccines to islands off the west coast of Ireland.

Following a request from the HSE, Defence Forces personnel delivered the consignment to the Aran Islands, and to Árainn Mhór in Co Donegal.

Three shipments of the Moderna vaccine were flown to Inis Mór and Inis Oírr, and Árainn Mhór from Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, by two EC-135 helicopters.

The vaccines were handed over to GPs on arrival, to be administered to residents on the islands.

The Defence Forces have said it marks a significant milestone in the roll-out of vaccines across the country, and highlights their support to the health service in the fight against Covid-19.

Interesting to note the island hopper lacks the floatation gear fitted on the Athlone-Belfast delivery in the previous post.

Also interesting is the usefulness of the clamshell doors for cargo.

The Type the lads trained on in the US also has the clamshell doors, only larger. Almost as practical as a heli with a rear ramp.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

                        • U.K. is reportedly mothballing 5 x H135s that were only delivered last year (reportedly with a special fit for service in NI)

Five Airbus H135 light utility helicopters procured by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to replace ageing Gazelle aircraft are being mothballed before even seeing any active service, it has emerged.

Because a tender process covers ass. If the end user ends up with useless kit ( see LTAV ), the CS can shift blame onto the end user and say, "well, they picked it, not us". My BiL served his time in several departments at a high level and the golden rule, etched on the inside of the eyelids of every CS is, "Don't embarrass the Minister!". The Minister, even though he or she is only a 4 yr passenger, must be kept free of all hint of blame or scandal, so some nice 135s, reasonably priced, will not be looked at unless they are trouble free and unlikely to cause headaches. Procurement is the one thing that senior CS fear above all things, because there is so much potential for things to go wrong. Apart from that, there aren't enough pilots to fill a roster for 5 new aircraft nor techs to service them nor support staff to keep them fed and watered.

“Our @irish_air_corps heli students are currently 18 weeks into their course at Shawbury. In that time they have each completed roughly 30+ hours on the Juno HT1.

The course so far has consisted of 5 weeks of ground school, followed by flight training, basic handling exercises and aircraft emergencies.

They have all gone solo, consisting of a standard circuit at Shawbury, ahead of their Basic Handling Test.

After the BHT they are due to begin instrument flying and navigation phase, before transferring across to the advanced course to learn current military tactics being employed, to include formation, NVG and low level flying.

Keep up the good work guys ????
