"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."
"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

Could the 12 foreign troops post be a confusion with the fact that any overseas deployment of more than 12 Irish troops is subject to dail approval?

                  • Govt considering proposal over sending army rangers to Mali

A proposal to send the Army Ranger Wing (ARW) to Mali on peacekeeping duties is being actively considered by the Government, RTÉ News has learned.
While no final political decision has been made, the proposal to deploy the special forces unit to the West African country would be favourably viewed, two sources told RTÉ.
The ARW has not been deployed overseas on an active mission for a decade.
Visiting the 20 Irish members of the Defence Forces who are training the Malian army, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was asked if Ireland planned to increase its presence on the EU Training Mission (EUTM).
He said: "We have been here in Mali as part of the EU training mission for five years now. Given the impact the region has on the rest of the world in terms of migration and being a source of terrorism in some cases, in terms of climate change, there will be an Irish presence in Africa for quite a period to come.
"It’s not just the peacekeeping and Irish aid. It’s the embassies. We are upgrading the embassy in Monrovia nearer to full embassy status.
"We are increasing the aid budget across Africa including in Ethiopia where I will be quite soon. We have made no decisions on future missions and it is under consideration."
Also speaking to RTÉ News in Mali, the Defence Forces Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Mark Mellett said: "It is ten years since the ARW deployed overseas in an active mission. Obviously they provide protection for vital missions like this but almost on an ad hoc basis.
"I think there are opportunities there, but once again it will be a political decision and a decision for Government."
The ARW has previously been deployed in East Timor, Liberia, and most recently in Chad. ....

                    • Time to upgrade their veciles though. 15 year old Ford F350s just won't cut it any more.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Did the "expansion" of the Wing ever happen, given modern security issues how many could be sent while holding an adequate reserve (just thinking out loud not asking for details).

As for the F350's a fair point.

Probably best not answered here, but the age of the vehicles is a good point, replacements would probably run to a couple of days of leo's pay..

Agreed, I didn't want or expect any details, just thinking out loud I suppose.

                            • Govt policy on 4x4s for all Departments is that anything over 10 years old should be replaced, as soon as, unless the operator can make a justifiable case for retention. A friend of mine who is responsible for the small quantity of vehicles in his very small unit of one Department, was told exactly this when he was told to turn in his 14 year old Trooper, which was in excellent condition, when an audit was done on his vehicles. He was told that it was Ford Ranger or nothing, unless he could prove his case. Specialist operators (DF, ESB, Coillte and so on) have a better case to get the vehicle they want instead of having a Ford Ranger imposed on them. I expect the ARW can make a strong case on a more direct route than burrowing through the bureaucracy....
