Would it not make any sense to keep LE Aoife in the fleet, she looks to be in pristine condition thanks to way they are looked after, could she be put into layup and in the event of another ship going for maintenance she could be activated again to fill any gaps. I think its very sad to lose such a fine ship.

She isn't pristine. She shares no parts with any ship other than the next to be retired. Her main weaponry is shared only with that other elderly ship. She could no more slot in to take over the duties of an LPV or New opv than a fiat punto could slot in to deliver the weekly grocery stock to ALDI or LIDL because the 40 foot truck broke down.
There is a reason these ships are being retired. They are no longer suitable for the role. They were in 1979, but that was a long time ago.For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.
