WAs Aoife the ship which had the issues with asbestos ?
"Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"

      • Would it not make any sense to keep LE Aoife i
Engines knackered, economically ..no! Probably would spend more time laid up than at sea in the future. She has her time done. Three generations of her crews have retired.. is it not her time?

        Minor..cylinder head gaskets.

not unfit, just uneconomical and out moded, in comparrsion to newer vessels, why have a cortina when a mondeo can do the job more efficiently.

hey are no longer suitable for the role.
The role perceived by the NS.

The Army declared Panhard AML 20/90s obselete as have the NS declared the P21 Class obselete, wheres the problem?

Fair enough but by what criteria is the PV unable to do FP which is its primary function.Ragarding role surely this is set by the WP,wouldnt do to have motley services defining their own roles.

Cost of Maintenence and upgrades to keep her compatible with the rest of the flotilla is primary. While the definition of the role may not be the remit of the arm involved they have the assets and their response being that certain vessels are no longer the optimum.

One quirk with the PVs being they are single screw, should she loose her propellor, shes helpless, all the other ships are twin screw giving them a greater margin for safety and reduced wear and tear of shafts , screws and gear boxes effectively doubling the life of the equipment.Even her primary weapons system is almost unique.

Samuel Beckett and James Joyce both have Electric drives thus reducing fuel costs. Both are larger enabling them to operate in heavier seas.

If the argument for retention was valid we would never replace them. If the NS had an endless budget they could have been retained but they are useless for inshore work and given we have far more capable OPVs why bother?

And if sentimentality were the key, we'd still have the minesweepers....

                  • Good valid points. There must be something else we are missing as a general application of the above would mean P23 should also get her P/O pennant.

Why do you think the NS ordered a 3rd new OPV?

                      • Its a bit like being sortoff pregnant, either the PVs are fit for service (as it appears) or should be paid off.

                          Duh!
They are being paid off? Have you been on LE Emer lately? What about L.E Deirdre? The 36 foot pennant that Aoife will fly tomorrow when she is being decommissioned, what do you suppose that is called?

Meanwhile L.E. Aisling's funnel mascot will be so much more appropriate,
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

If she is paid off, we are down to a 7 ship navy. Better of waiting till a replacement is on its way. P63 is over a year off. A year without ship, even on light duties, means a ship less to train new crew on. In any event, P23 is possibly in the best condition of the three.
But still no point hanging on to it "just cos"
