  • PEACE MISSION Irish Defence Forces to continue participation in overseas peacekeeping missions in Syria and Kosovo after securing Government approval

Irish troops contributing to UNDOF are also set to relocate to Camp Faouar in Syria having left in 2014 due to an escalation of fighting

THE Irish Defence Forces will continue their participation in two overseas peacekeeping missions after securing Government approval.

Ireland currently contribute to the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Syria and the UN authorised International Security Presence in Kosovo (KFOR).

UNDOF was established in 1974 and remains an important element in ensuring some level of stability in the Middle East.

Members of the 57th Infantry Group are presently based in Camp Ziouani on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights since being relocated from Camp Faouar on the Syrian side due to an escalation in fighting in 2014.

However, troops are now set to return to Camp Faouar this year.

Defence Minister Paul Kehoe had advised Government that conditions such as force protection, medical provision, access and exit routes, would have to be met before a full return of Irish Defence Force personnel to Camp Faouar would be permitted.

After visiting the camp, Irish military authorities were satisfied that conditions had improved sufficiently and Irish troops will relocate later this year.

The move will be subject to an ongoing assessment of the region’s security situation and continued improvement of protection measures and living standards within the camp.

It has also been proposed that Ireland will continue to provide members of the Defence Force for service with the mission for a further 12 months.

The news comes as the country prepares to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Ireland’s participation in UN peacekeeping.

A special event will be held at midday at Dublin Castle this Sunday, June 24.

Commenting, Minister Kehoe said: “It will be a fitting opportunity to honour the men and women who have served our country with distinction in peacekeeping missions around the world.”

For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Who controls clearances for UN Mil Personnel, transiting BEIRUT Airport. Do they clear with equipment, personal issued weapons and ammunition. What is the actual reason for delay and is the carrier familiar with required procedures. Surely after decades of deployments somebody knows how to do it and prevent cowboy perceptions of UN organisation OR is there a deeper reason!!! This is the second time for an IRISH delay.

Maybe, maybe. In any event, we should ask the Lebanese Government for an explanation as to why returns to Ireland are being delayed.

                • The reports are saying that they airline hired did not have the appropriate clearances to land in Beruit. So it is not really a Lebanese Government issue as a contract management issue by whoever awarded the tender.

                  • Would that have been the responsibility of the UN, or Ireland?
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
                    Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

I don't believe an airline exists that would not apply for clearance to do its job. The granting of clearance lies with the Lebanese Aviation Authority

and I would not say it's a very busy Airport, with a delay until Sunday difficult to comprehend.

                        • Geopolitical reasons?
Would it be the result of Trump's recent declaration on Israel and the Golan Heights?
It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.

Some country's are constant meddlers and dismantlers within the UN and should be named by that organisation. The UN seems to be happy to join in with other NGO's rather than a Global oversite force demanding compliance by ALL members.

If the same thing happens twice with the same parameters, then there is design, or a particular UN department is staffed by people that need further training???
