  • Watch an Irish army unit get ambushed by their enemies (in a drill)

They make short work of them.

WHEN IRELAND SENDS 130 troops to the Golan Heights this month, they’re going to have to be ready for anything.

And, judging on their preparations in the Glen of Imaal this week, the 50th Infantry Division will be just that.

They showed us two drills this week, the disarming of a bomb and this, a reaction to being ambushed while on patrol in an armoured personnel carrier.

The bad guys, identifiable by their hoodies, are made short work of by the Defence Forces.

    • Dear God. If they're ever ambushed, debus, kneel when there is cover just in front and bunch up like that they will be wiped out!!

      • To be fair, they were limited in their movement by the large media crew in front of them. An element not normally present during an ambush.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

        • Those BFAs are shite
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

No they're not.The problem is that as usual they have been issued out in haste and the vast majority of people using them have not been instructed properly how they are to be used.
I would lay money on it that most of those guys(the ones getting stoppages) had their gas setting at "R".They new BFA requires the gas plug turned to "A".
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

Well then instruction on them has been shite. What are they like on the end of the barrel? Much difference in balance? Also, are these much better than the old BFAs?

How do you get it on and off? Screws? Pliers?

That's a good thing. I wonder how many of the old ones were "lost" during training?

                      • I am leaving this BFA talk here 'cause it relates to the ex/demo/WHY/pressjolly which relates to the deployment.

                        • Coveney reviews troops ahead of Golan Heights deployment

Minister for Defence Simon Coveney reviewed troops at Collins Barracks in Cork today ahead of their deployment to the Golan Heights later this month.

130 members of the 50th Infantry group will be the fifth Irish contingent to be deployed on a six-month tour of duty with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), since September 2013.

UNDOF was established in the Golan Heights following the Six Day War between Israel, Syria and Egypt in 1973, but the region has become increasingly unstable in recent times.

The Irish contingent, under the command of Lt Col Daragh McKevitt, is made up of 14 officers, one chaplain, and 115 enlisted personnel.

It will provide armoured force protection for UNDOF personnel, and provide support for observation posts throughout the area of separation.

The area of separation in the Golan Heights region between Israel and Syria is over 75km long, and varies in width between 10km and 200m.

The terrain is hilly and dominated in the north by Mount Hermon.
