Somewhere in ireland on a dusky autumn evening a lone plane quietly touched down. taxiing across the apron to a small yet aprehensive crowd, the door opened and 130 of our finest heroes walked down the stairs and into the arms of families and loved ones. a couple of media types took some photots before crowding around a lone soldier on bended knee asking his partner to become his wife. money shots were taken, a statement from the happy couple, a brief mention of the situation in Syria and then they dispersed to find something more news worthy. The soldiers slowly trudged through family members, hugging and kissing kids and partners, mums and dads, brothers sisters and friends. A brief 30 second slot on the news programs, radio stations or a few lines on national websites were all that marked the passing of this valiant group of irish warriors.
Meanwhile in the phillipines - the troops arrived home to a national heroes welcome - courtesy of the above Irish lads and lasses who had saved them.
"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."
"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

The Philippines photo does look a little staged managed though, I mean, the're obviously students who've been carted out to receive the parade, there's no one else on the other side of the road and those that are don't seem overly bothered, so I'm sure that outside the parameters of the photo, the Filipinos got as much of a welcome home as the Irish did.
Sorry to piss on your paradeLast edited by SwiftandSure; 9 October 2014, 11:37.

Tbh and I think I'd speak for a few other soldiers when I say this. After a 4/6 month tour the last thing you want to do is get caught for a parade....
When I got home, I grabbed my bags, quick conversation with COS Earley(Great lad) went over to the family, big hugs, quick drive home and then I went unconscious for the best part of 24 hours. But we'd been awake for close to 36 hours at that stage so I can't say every trip coming home felt the way I did. But if you asked me to do a parade I would have politely called in sick.
The lads in UNDOF did a great job and they and the country should be proud of their achievement but whenever I see lads coming home on the news part of me feels a bit sick at the media intrusion. Its a personal moment between a soldier and his friends/family. Let them greet their families in peace and then ask them if you can take their photo or ask them about the mission. To close with and kill the enemy in all weather conditions, night and day and over any terrain

Fair points... I hate parades myself now that i think about it. also didnt realise the fillipino bit was sort of staged.."He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."

Haha everybody hates parades. I honestly don't know why we have them.
Troops hate them because they get inspected, drilled and then stand around for hours.
NCO's hate them because the same and they have to organize them.
Officers hate them because the same and they have to organize them.
Even the guy who the parade is for... COS/Minister/Foreign dignitary honestly look like they hate them. And I always get the impression they hate everybody making a fuss about them.
WHO ARE THEY FOR?!?!?!?To close with and kill the enemy in all weather conditions, night and day and over any terrain

Officers are like brussel sprouts
they look like sh*t
They seem to serve little purpose
Everyone hates them
But its not Christmas without them"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."

the apocryphal tale of the Guards RSM who is reputed to have said, on the 11th November 1918, 'well, now thats over with we can get back to some real soldiering...' leaps to mind...
