      oh no.
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
      Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

        • I'd imagine that before you'ld go in all guns blazing looking for the Fijians, You'd ensure that you weren't leaving the Filipino contingent exposed as hostages to fortune.

Actually what seems to have happened is they escorted Filipino troops from some ouposts to UN HQ, the troops surrounded by the Al Nuasra are still besieged, according to RTE and those Joe Magriollagh tweets.

Don't know what happened today that will become clear but
There are different groups of Filipino being besieged at different posts

                Positions 68-69 apparently.

The Fijian force was captured near position 27.

                • Yes, the safe passage was organised for other Filipino troops. their colleagues who are besieged are still in the same situation, as of a few hours ago anyway.

                      • Lads, what's the story with Israel's oil interests in the Golan Heights? Haven't had time to read up on it properly, but it seems that Israel annexes a part of Syria post 6 day war, let's the UN babysit the land in contention while it's drilling for oil. Is that right? Surely that would have the crusties up in arms if Ireland is party to securing territory for the benefit of US backed Israeli oil companies exploiting Syrian natural resources?

Or did I just read one too many tin foil hat articles?

Israel has granted a U.S. company the first license to explore for oil and gas in the occupied Golan Heights, John Reed of the Financial Times reports. A local subsidiary of the New York-listed company Genie Energy — which is advised by former vice president Dick Cheney and whose shareholders include Jacob Rothschild and Rupert …

Israel has given permission for an American based energy company to drill for oil in the Golan Heights, a plateau it captured from Syria in 1967.

                          • The filipinos who refused to hand over weapons and equipment but we're surrounded are in two groups. One was rescued. The irish are preparing another exit route for the other group... If this report is to be believed. the figians are still held hostage.

"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

                            • Situation seems to be escalating,

                              Fro the Daily Star Lebanon

MANILA, Philippines: The Philippine defense chief says Filipino peacekeepers in the Golan Heights have been attacked by Syrian rebels who are holding dozens of Fijian troops hostage.

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin told reporters Saturday in a series of text messages that Filipino troops manning one U.N. encampment have been "extricated," while soldiers in another encampment were "now under attack."

He said the attack started early Saturday Syrian time.

Gazmin did not say whether there were any casualties. Asked how the troops were doing, he said they had "high morale."

The Syrian rebels have seized 44 Fijian peacekeepers and demanded that the 75 Filipinos manning two separate U.N. encampments surrender their weapons, but they have refused.
