    1874

Ernest Shackleton, polar explorer, was born at Kilkea House, Co.Kildare.

    1901

Brendan Bracken was born in Templemore, Co.Tipperary. He ran away from home aged 15 and worked in Australia for three years. He moved to England and talked his way into an English Public School and never looked back. He worked on various newspapers in England and most crucially became an election agent for Winston Churchill. He was elected Conservative MP for Paddington himself in 1929. At the start of the Second World War he became Parliamentary Private secretary to Churchill and, in 1941, Minister for Information. He was created Viscount Bracken in 1952 and died August 8th 1958. Not bad for a building contractor’s son from Templemore. His father Joseph was a founder of the GAA and also carved the 98 Man, a Clonmel landmark outside the Town Hall and a monument to the men of 1798.

Apache Indian, Goyathlay. His name means the Yawner but he is better known to us as Geronimo. He was a Chiricahua Apache born in New Mexico in 1829 when that area of the US was still part of Mexico. He waged war on the Mexicans after his family was slaughtered in 1858 and on the US Army when the Apache were moved to a desert reservation in Arizona in 1876. He finally surrendered to General Nelson Miles on 4 Sept 1886. In the last days of the campaign against him one quarter of the US Army (5000 men) was required to hunt down Geronimo and his followers. When he surrendered he was accompanied by 16 warriors, 12 women and 6 children. Unlike many of his enemies the Yawner died of old age at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. 95 years ago today.

There's a beautiful monument in Dunmore East commemorating local sailors and all those lost in the local waters which mentions the crew of a U-Boat. Presumably it is U-1276.

                  1849

Field Marshal Sir Hugh Gough from Co. Tipperary won the battle of Gujerat in the Second Sikh War bringing the Punjab under British control. The British and Indian forces lost 96 killed and 700 wounded among whom was a man who underwent an amputation with, for the first time in the field, the benefit of anaesthetic. Cpl John Ryder recorded his amazement at this leap in medical science. No doubt he felt the army was getting soft. The cannon outside the officers mess in Mc Kee Bks, Dublin are Sikh cannon captured about this time.

Lucky Lady II begins nonstop global flight

From Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas, the Lucky Lady II, a B-50 Superfortress, takes off on the first nonstop round-the-world flight. Under the command of Captain James Gallagher, and featuring a crew of 14 men, the aircraft averaged 249 miles per hour on its 23,452-mile trek. The Lucky Lady II was refueled four times in the air by B-29 tanker planes and on March 2 returned to the United States after 94 hours in the air.

                            World Trade Center bombed

At 12:18 p.m., a terrorist bomb explodes in a parking garage of the World Trade Center in New York City, leaving a crater 60 feet wide and causing the collapse of several steel-reinforced concrete floors in the vicinity of the blast. Although the terrorist bomb failed to critically damage the main structure of the skyscrapers, six people were killed and more than 1,000 were injured. The World Trade Center itself suffered more than $500 million in damage. After the attack, authorities evacuated 50,000 people from the buildings, hundreds of whom were suffering from smoke inhalation. The evacuation lasted the whole afternoon.

I intended to post this last night but there was a power cut on my housing estate that wasn't rectified until this afternoon. It was like East Berlin here, in total darkness looking over a wall at the bright lights of the next lot. Needless to say many prayers were offered up for the ESB last night in the Hog household. :D

The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them: that's the essence of inhumanity.
