            1746

Bonnie Prince Charlie's rebellion ended in Scotland with defeat at Culloden. Charles Stuart escaped but hundreds of his followers died in the battle and its aftermath.

            1800

George Charles Bingham, British soldier, was born. He commanded the British Cavalry in the Crimea including the famous Light Brigade. He inherited the family title of Earl of Lucan and one of his descendants was the famous nanny-murdering Lord Lucan.

            1871

John Millington Synge, dramatist and poet, author of The Playboy of the Western World, was born.

            1923

Members of the National Army converged on the ruined castle at Castleblake, near Rosegreen, Co.
Tipperary after receiving information that it was being used by the Republicans. The Free-State forces were led by Captain Quinlan and Lieutenant Patrick Kennedy, the latter being a native of Rosegreen and former member of 1st Battalion, Third Tipperary Brigade. After reaching the ruined castle, Lieutenant Kennedy called on the occupants to surrender. John Cleary, Third Tipperary Brigade Adjutant, surrendered. Lieutenant Kennedy then fired three shots through the door of a make shift shelter the Republicans had built in the ruins and then he began to break it down. A grenade was thrown from inside the shelter, Lieutenant Kennedy was badly wounded and was later to die from his wounds. After the explosion the Free-State troops moved in from all sides to clear the building. Captain Ned Somers, former Free-State Commanding Officer in Callan, left the building firing his revolver and was shot by the Free-State forces. Theo English, Brigade Intelligence Officer, Third Tipperary Brigade, was next to emerge and was also shot. He was a native of Tipperary town.

When she failed to send a resurface signal at 0830 the following day a search was initiated but the wreck wasn't found until two months later, 45 miles south of Portland in 300ft of water. No recovery was possible but a Navy investigation concluded that the accident was caused by the snorkel tube breaking off or a battery explosion.

1993 Bosnian Croats massacred 116 Muslims in the village of Ahmici. Six men went on trial in 1998 in the Hague on charges of war crimes. In 2000 Vladimir Santic, head of the Croat Jokers police unit, was sentenced to 25 years in prison; Drago Josipovic was sentenced to 15 years; Zoran and Mirjan Kupreskic were sentenced to 10 and 8 years, and Vlatko Kupreskic received 6 years. In 2001 the tribunal overturned the convictions, released 3 defendants and reduced the sentences of 2 others.
