Ernest Shackleton, polar explorer, was born at Kilkea House, Co.Kildare.
1901
Brendan Bracken was born in Templemore, Co.Tipperary. He ran away from home aged 15 and worked in Australia for three years. He moved to England and talked his way into an English Public School and never looked back. He worked on various newspapers in England and most crucially became an election agent for Winston Churchill. He was elected Conservative MP for Paddington himself in 1929. At the start of the Second World War he became Parliamentary Private secretary to Churchill and, in 1941, Minister for Information. He was created Viscount Bracken in 1952 and died August 8th 1958. Not bad for a building contractor’s son from Templemore. His father Joseph was a founder of the GAA and also carved the 98 Man, a Clonmel landmark outside the Town Hall and a monument to the men of 1798.

Volunteer Martin Barry from Nenagh. Died in Mallow hospital of Wounds received on 13th January when he was shot by Black and Tans near his home.
