"Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"

It goes downhill after the author makes the following statement:
Despite this author’s qualifications, keen interest, and upcoming visit to Ireland in general and to the Curragh Camp in particular, a very respectful request, even many months in advance, for a brief unit visit, interview and photo session was politely and somewhat understandably declined.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.
"The devils of kildare"???? LMFAO
Perhaps we should move this to the Lazy journos thread?
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.
Says no female personnel ever attempted Selection. Incorrect, according to An Cosantóir, anyway

One thing that jumped out at me in the recent video from Exercise Poseidon is that all the assaulters were carrying the HK416 as opposed to the MP5. Compare the images and video to those of the last published ones in 2011.Back then it was MP5's all the way.I wonder does this indicate a shift away from 9mm like a lot of other SOF units??

Just reading something on this recently, not specific to the ARW but around the weapons in use by SF in general. The view being that while 9mm weapons are ideal for room clearance and relatively close range work, they lack the stopping power of a rifle round and while multiple hits can be achieved with SMGs, weapons like the HK 416 can achieve greater accuracy and stopping power. Bearing in mind the fanatacism of the modern day terrorists and the need for first shot kill it would seem specialist rifle type weapons are the prefered option in many camps. Some recent photos from a book I'm reading highlight the Diamaco weapons systems as the prefered option in Afghanistan for operators such as the SBS.
So to sum up, yup, I reckon you could be right about a shift in weapon choices.
Rifle calibre primary weapons, with pdw or high penetration sidearm as secondary seems to be the current SOF thinking. It is good to see the ARW follow international trends. Maybe when the 4.6mm and 5.7mm are standardised by NATO you could see a greater shift.
All the bad guys are wearing body armour these days. Cops in the USA learnt it the hard way. LAPD Moto Cops are now doing speed checks with a mount for an AR15A3 on the back. Pistol calibre isn't enough any more.
Away from the ARW "Green" role, their weapons and tactics would follow that of international police experiences. Unfortunately, in the counter-terrorism role, armed cops have been the first to make contact in recent years.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.
