The question is, of often should they support the Gardai with them?
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
    Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

They must be task org'ed that way, rather than established, the Australian Army website says otherwise.

              • Guys check out this article in the times. Very interesting stuff indeed.

Specifically "Another aspect of the agreement provides that the Irish Army will be provided, free of charge, with equipment that is surplus to the requirements of the British army."

Hmm I expect that this will be in the context of a mobile light infantry based force so no we wont be getting 40 or 50 Challenger 1s but would anyone care to speculate what this will be? Also I think in light of us looking like we will be participating in anti piracy ops in the Indian ocean (far cheaper to deploy an Irish OPV rather than a British Frigate) will this also include the Navy and air Corps? What kind of training will we be taking part in?

                Interesting times indeed!

                • i would assume it will be primarily about mine protected vehicles - we bought so much stuff, and of so many different types that getting it all into 'core' is a pain and very expensive. we are, of course, also down by about a fifth on our previous strength. none of it is rubbish, its just not needed.

it might also mean assets from our pool of myriad UAV's - it will also be interesting to see how quickly the A400M can replace our C-130J's....

                  • im waiting on the internet to catch fire over this but so far so good. no shinnerbots out of bed yet and no tree huggers or tin foil hat wearers in sight.
"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."
"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

                    • Yeah I kind thought this would have gotten a lot more publicity allright. it's probably the most significant development for the military in decades, and also a huge step in terms of our relationship with the UK. The shinners will be apoplectic! Collaboration with Crown Forces and all that.

In terms of training I wonder will we eventually see battalion scale exercises the UK's training areas around Salisbury plain or will it be small unit specialist training for helicopter crews, Special forces, etc?

This really is MASSIVE news and I'm waiting for a lot of media comment to happen at some stage.

                      • It will more than likely be relatively small numbers of British personnel attending courses in UNTSI

Or potentially small numbers of Irish instructors going to the UK

                          • Would this infringe upon our "not neutral but non-aligned" status?

Delighted to hear the news though.

                            • I would guess nope, because we are not deploying willy nilly on operations with the british forces - without govt direction and remember we can deploy up to 12 (i think?) soldiers anywhere without the triple lock BS.

                              • Well at first reading I would have thought "Yes" a mahoosive resounding yes. After all it would be stretching the bounds of credibility beyond breaking point to claim to be "neutral" after having singed a defence agreement with a Global, Nuclear armed Nato member that is a permanent member of the security council and has a very special relationship with the US. The crusties and Shannon protesters might literally explode. This is akin to signing a formal defence agreement with Satan and the legions of hell (in their eyes) However I doubt it will be sold as such.

I expect the formal announcement will be along the lines of the following: Ireland has signed an agreement under the auspices of the UN to provide peacekeeping and humanitarian training to UK military personnel in the UN school in the Currragh. As part of this deal a limited number of Irish personnel will on occasion take part in specialist training courses in the UK.

All mention of "defence agreements" will be kept out of the press release and there will be a lot of emphasis on words like "peacekeeping" "United Nations" etc. It might also be pointed out that this is NOT a mutual defence pact and that the triple lock remains secure.

However I think there might well be small print, hidden addendum's which formally put in place things like RAF fighter cover. Anyway there is no doubt that this could yet become a bit of a political minefield (pun intended) if the cards are not played correctly. It will be very interesting to see what gets revealed or included in the official statement.
