I agree with what you are saying, but in my experience, if you didn't get a qualification through the DF, then the DF do not want to know about it. I stand open to correction, but personally, I have seen people who are qualified as Paramedics unable to administer first aid in the RDF, civvie gym instructor with the same UL cert as the DF counterparts not allowed to warm up a body of troops for a run. /rant
easy. DOD says 'jump' and anyone who fails to leap in the air with joy in their hearts is deemed to have resigned. Sgt or Lt Gen alike...

for all the legitimate criticism of the DOD and the government in general over defence, there seems to be an awful lot of 'nah, i'm not doing that' in the DF, and one might ask if at least one contributary element to the general indifference to defence issues within government and the wider body politic is a veiw that there's no point doing anything with defence because the DF 'won't wear it'.

all it needs, on any of these issues, is a handwritten 'thou shalt...' from the Minister of Defence. anyone who doesn't like having the heavy maint on the MOWAG's being done by a contractor, or AW139 being flown on deployment, can always look for a second career on the fried chicken retail sector... and given the savings/efficiencies available to the DOD, the minister is unlikely to not accept their resignation.

Except they specialise in vehicle design and suspension

      And they don't do maintenance

In fairness, in my location that attitude is gone. Do more with less.

From the little I have heard, it is parts availability, warranties, time/resources, the punishment the vehicles have received and of course cost that has the MOWAG fleet away from ops.

If it takes 3 guys 3 weeks to do the job on 1 vehicle. How many will get through in a year (especially when you only have 2 guys and they also have to do other work)?

I say get MOWAG in to refurbish if necessary

      • An individual known to me who tried to bring in civilian work practises, ie, instead of waiting around for parts, went and made himself useful elsewhere in the Workshop, was firmly put in his place and told to WAIT. The old mindset is still there.

        • Quite simply, If Mowag can't deliver from Switzerland, then they have to be gripped and told to set up a shop in Dublin or Kildare and to get the finger out. Whoever is responsible for dealing with them has to shake them up and not take sh1t from them. There are thousands of Piranhas out there now, so either Ireland is getting fobbed off or someone needs to get in the face of the agent...

          • would take **** all other than determination to set up a MOWAG fleet workshop in the curragh
"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."
"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

              • The IDA will provide. If you hit the right ear in Govt, you'd have it established in no time. Any potential for technical jobs and they'll bite your hand off.

                • No thanks, the consultants reports costs alone would fund a squadron of replacements.

                  • For gearboxes and driveshafts and the electronic equivalent of an Airbus? All of the expertise is already in the country in spades. This shit is not that hard to do; some people talk it up as if it was incredibly difficult magic but it's not. I was in awe of aircraft engineering when I started as an apprentice but 95% is actually quite basic, relatively easy to fix or make and most modern aircraft are plug-and-play or modular or designed for conscripts to maintain. So are modern military vehicles. Most, if not all, AFV drivetrains and engines are direct equivalents of truck/bus/train engines/drivetrains. Like aircraft, most of the time-consuming stuff is simply about gaining access to awkward pipes and wires or troubleshooting via computer.........if the DF is the source of a portion of the problems, then it has to take action, if it wants to stay credible.

                    • I don't know where alot of you get you info, there are civilian employees in most workshops some who have no army service.
As for parts?? The parts are there but have you taught maybe they are needed elsewhere (ie) overseas
As for the need for a mowag fleet workshop why?? We have been dealing with them since 2000 there's not alot not known I cvbw in dftc.
As for a mowag upgrade I can see all the fvt 800 converted to rws,

Any help would be much appreciated!

                        Cheers.

                        • It was probably as routine as changing any other component, done whenever there was time/manpower/scheduled down time/older unit out of production, etc.
