And you're still left with a 1970's vintage light tank without a modern equivalent, with a non NATO compatible 76mm gun, with said gun's well known crew fume issue, with difficult to source ammunition, that can't fire on the move or kill anything more than a 30mm Bushmaster can, that will still probably never deploy further than 30 miles east of the Curragh. But hey it has lower ground pressure than a man....great for those parades down O'Connell St.

I'll go back to avoiding the Ryanair thread for now....

As minimum, was the fume problem not sorted?

We could upgrade to a 90mm, upgrade the armour etc etc

        Alternatively a MOWAG with a 90mm

So after new engines, armour, tracks, FCS, fume mitigation and possibly armament you could have bought one or 2 more mowags. Pausing the rifle upgrade for the sake of a few relics in the DFTC stinks of army politics and a parting gift from a cav man.

The difference being, the S61, unlike the scorpoins, do not still have the same skin, engines, electrics as it did when bought first day. Also, the S61 is being replaced.

Cheaper to buy a new vehicle.

The engine upgrade alone exceeds the cost price of the existing vehicle.

              • Just a thought, given the AFV recognition skills of the average Irish person...what if the 'upgraded' Scorpions looked a bit like, [ahem] this?

Just you know, some applique armour and a new muzzle brake...totally different powerpack and road wheels and tracks, and dimensions. But you know, these aftermarket kits are very comprehensive nowadays...

                  CV90120 ?

                  An unproven prototype ?

The IFV version comes in at 2-4 times the cost of a Irish MOWAG.

                  • It would look great driving down O'Connell street on Easter Sunday 2016.

I'm expecting a lot of vehicle "trials" come 2016

On a more serious note - is the Scorpion's low profile an advantage in its recce role, versus a Mowag or LTAV? If so, is it totally outweighed by the limitations of the platform - even given a total upgrade.

                        • The problem with the CVRT famult is that is fine for what its designed, scouting in front of armoured formations and finding the soviets in westernm germany. Anything else, and its got problems. In the modern battlefield its lack of mine protection means its totally obsolete.

The problem though is that the past two decades have really put this development of this sort of AFV on a back burner, especially the past decade. Whole load of scorpion replacements that got cannedfrom the 1990's onwards. Hence why the brits use CVRT in Afghanistan, even though by this stage they're like grandfathers axe.

The result is that although the CVRT might be obsolete, there is not an awful lot of replace it with. The thinking may be to upgrade now, retain the skills and expertise, and hopefully in a decade from now projects like FRES SV will have matured. and be available for export customers.

If you are going for aftermarket upgrades, you forgot a rear spoiler and go-faster stripes...
