  • Given the size of the AFV fleet and the apparent abandonment of the TAFV by the Gombeenerazzi in Civilian government is it time to give up on the idea of corps specific vehicles and start bodging up our own modular additions to the PIIIH fitouts?

I'm thinking put the money into modular sensor fits for non-recce equipped vehicles and modifications to the MRVs/Infantry carriers to allow some of them to be used as escort/DFS vehicles when required (namely, armour kits, ECM additional optics or Amn cap).

    • If theyre so cheap to buy, why havent we purchased a hape more of them and increased the size of the scorpion unit AND posted vehicles overseas?

I assume its because of the costs of the sensor and weapons suites?

"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

      • Just as an aside, given the introduction of so many electronic pieces of vehicle and manborne kit into the Army, has there been a relative increase in the number of people trained to fix and service them? Is the DF generating enough techs to keep the stuff going?

This is what poland have in development, to be in service at the end of the decade

                  • Ok, it’s not Cadillac Gage and this isn’t The Viet Nam war or the Saudi Arabian National Guard. No, it’s the Textron Commando Select and it serves as a testament that some designs just don’t go away. That’s a 90mm cannon on this model and I hear rumor that they intend to offer it for a light tank requirement for the 82nd Abn Div.

                      • Its Cadillac Gage Commando rebranded with a 90mm gun. Similar to sticking an AMl 90 turret onto a AML M3 VTT Hull, 60s technology despite the shiny bells and whistles.

Yanks didn't like it first time round and was mostly employed by Military Police units...now theres a thought....PA's with AML90s...!

Its a far different vehicle to the 1960's commando, (which was liked by those who used it and exported well, just not by the "armor mafia")

Its a massive improvement in terms of protection, firepower and mobility, thanks to Timoney

The Us Army has ordered 2,058 M1117 in the past decade, which even for them is a respectable amount.

Canada have just ordered 500 of an improved model as their New TAPV.

For what its intended for, a pretty low tech army fighting lightly armed insurgents in Afghanistan, its ideal.

light years ahead of the AML/Scorpion.

                            • Amazing how there's a thread on 4 (maybe 6) 'operational' vehicles that's 14 pages long. 70's technology with diesel engines that weren't designed for them, a line of sight 76mm & they have to be low loaded anywhere they need to go. Oh, & have never been deployed outside the country (outside the Glen would also be accurate!)

Time to let go of these realms of fantasy that some people in green hold onto, or else actually invest in some proper CVRT type vehicles & then deploy them overseas where they will serve a purpose.

                              • The 76mm used to do indirect fire has that changed?
