Indirect fire with what FCS? All you are doing there is utilsing it as a very basic & very inaccurate mortar.

    • Alvis Scorpion CVR-T Future?

With the demise & retirement of the AML fleet. Overseas deployment on the scale of Liberia. We're long range patrols were common. The AMLs provided direct fire support to these mechanized infantry patrols.

Now that this is gone and Cav Mowags armed with 40mm AGL & 30mm Cannons are in was or do you think there would be ever consideration for the deployment of the Scorpion in lieu of the AML90s as a more powerful weapons platform?

Will the the tanks ever be updated or up-armed with 90mm guns like other armies scores have?

      http://www.scorpiontank.co.uk/html/C...T)History.html

Just wondering about this after reading that the AMLs went.

The Philippine Army will acquire 14 M113 armored personnel carriers in 2015 to boost its fire support capabilities.

LA, Philippines - The Philippine Army will acquire 14 M113 armored personnel carriers in 2015 to boost its fire support capabilities.

Army spokesperson Capt. Anthony Bacus said the M113 vehicles will be installed with 76-mm turrets among others from decommissioned Scorpion combat vehicle reconnaissance (tracked) units.

"It will be fitted with modern fire control and thermal imaging equipment. Once it is completed, the 76mm cannon armed M113s will be quite lethal," Bacus added.

The Army is currently operating over 100 M113 units, and the would-be acquisitions are manufactured by BAE Systems Land and Armaments.

In the United States Army, the M113 series have been replaced as front-line combat vehicles by the M2 and M3 Bradley.

The Department of National Defense had said that more than P85 billion is needed for the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines from 2014 to 2018.

Last year, the Army commissioned excess M1114 Armored Humvees as well as M939 and M35 truck series from the US. The new fighting vehicles provided fire support during the Zamboanga siege last September.

              And turret upgrades

The UK have put Scimitar turrets on Spartan vehicles to create Scimitar 2

They may even sell off a few

              • wouldn't a relatively cheap option be a M113 either carrying, or towing, the 120mm mortars and buying guided ammunition (GPS and laser) for the mortars to use?

yes, a PIII with 30/35mm and all the optics and a super-duper FCS would be ideal, as well as PGM's for the mortars (3-5 metre accuracy at 8km...), but needs must as the DoF rides...

So you're suggesting that we buy an antique that every other army in Europe is busily getting rid off?

the US Army was buying new ones as recently as 2007, and as the Philippine purchase shows, they are still in production.

of course, if you've got the shekels need to buy PIII mortar carriers then go for it, but if not you'll just have to settle for something less fancy but that still works, however damaging to the ego...

nothing to do with ego, the m 113 is totally outdated technology, suggesting buying one is down right insane.

Even the us, who literally had thousands is replacing theirs

if you can find another option, with enough armour, mobility, capacity, reliability and significantly cheaper than the PIII please mention it - i'm not selling M113's, so i don't care if Ireland buys them, but i do know you need more armoured/protected, fire support-carrying vehicles for the overseas role, and your pockets for such a purchace are not deep.

"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

you do realise that its the mortar and its smarts thats the expensive bit? That apart from israel's cardom there is no other modern system in service with any european army? That mobile mortars That spending a fortune on a modern mortar system and sticking it on a 1950's relic that we don't use would be stupid.

its called the ruag 87, because it was introduced to the swiss army in 1987.

Even if you forget about the the cracks, age, and lack of pneumatic tyres, the brandt was obsolete

You need a specialised mount with a recoil systems to fire a 120mm from any type of vehicle. Thats expensive, couple that with modern fire control if you're buying one then you might as well mount it in a modern vehicle.
