Interesting that the class was named after a RN sailor. Good to see that people aren't worked up by those who join HM Forces from this island any more.

Not taking away from the exceptional courage of the crew involved but often wondered why the RN persisted with such operations when the obvious thing would have been an air strike such as what finished the Tirpritz,Scheer etc.

Because they didn't have carrier based aircraft with the range and payload, possibly. Even with that, they had limited successes against the Nazi ships you mentioned.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Who decides on the name of the Pl?

By the way great choice, better than the numbering system we use.

No PLs in Naval Service. Recruit Classes.

Started by the Current DCOS SP when he was FOCNS.

Have brought a bit of Irish Maritime history into the classes which is great.

Be great to see the Army follow suit, plenty of great Irish Soldiers to name Platoons after.

The Class officer picked the name. Not sure who would sign-off on it. Maybe CNC.

The recruits were required to research L/S Magennis.

Good idea. An inspirational figure, who survived the Nazis to encounter entrenched bigotry at home and remained a modest, decent man throughout.

I hate when the Naval Service come up with great ideas that we should have been doing for years, growl spit grrrrr.

This is yet another reason why MM should be COS.

I think future Army Classes should be named after people who died while on UN service and not going back to the War of Independence etc, start perhaps with the guys lost during the Black water excercises during the 'emergency'
Covid 19 is not over ....it's still very real..Hand Hygiene, Social Distancing and Masks.. keep safe
