  • NZ navy barred from boarding boats in fishing stand-off

The New Zealand navy is engaged in a stand-off with two boats thought to be illegally fishing for toothfish in the Southern Ocean.

The New Zealand navy is engaged in a stand-off with two boats thought to be illegally fishing toothfish in the Southern Ocean.

Naval patrol vessel HMNZS Wellington had been monitoring the vessels which are sailing under the flag of Equatorial Guinea, the foreign minister said.

Overnight authorities in Guinea gave New Zealand permission to board them.

But crew members barred authorities from boarding the vessels.

Foreign Minister Murray McCully said the HMNZS Wellington tried to board the ships which was its "legitimate right", but the vessels refused to co-operate.

"Due to the conditions and the evasive tactics of the masters, it was not possible to safely board these vessels."

Warning shots across the bow, forceful boarding. These fishermen are not above the law, and resistance is the best indication that something illegal is happening.

Wasn't there a similar case a few years ago with a Spanish trawler that involved a belt of 7.62 being used to persuade them that resistance is useless...

We need to have more Kiwi officers on exchange with our NS here. Teach them all about boarding a non compliant craft.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.

...and that's just their 'Customs' service!

I've seen some AUS Customs cutters/crews in action on the 'Nothing To Declare' programmes on TV3 ....they are not afraid to open fire when necessary!

It's that old usual language equalizer "Hi do you speak .5 ... this is what it sounds like "
"Are they trying to shoot down the other drone? "

"No, they're trying to fly the tank"
