Seem's that the Bear's were back yesterday:The Irish Aviation Authority has confirmed that two Russian military aircraft flew within Irish-controlled airspace yesterday.
In a statement the IAA said the aircraft operated within 25 nautical miles of the Irish coast.
But it said the aircraft did not enter Irish sovereign airspace at any time.
It said the flight posed no safety threat to civil aviation on this occasion.
The IAA confirmed it monitored the activity of two Russian military aircraft off the west-south/ east coast of Ireland for about four hours yesterday from about 3-7pm.
The authority said it was not informed in advance.
It comes as the British Ministry of Defence said that RAF jets were scrambled yesterday after two Russian military aircraft were seen off the Cornwall coast.
The Russian Bear bombers were escorted from the UK area of interest, but did not enter its sovereign airspace.
The IAA said the aircraft operated in North Atlantic airspace and in airspace under the control of the IAA.
Irish controlled airspace extends 256 nautical miles off the west coast of Ireland. Irish sovereign airspace extends 12 nautical miles off the Irish coast.
Last month, the Irish Aviation Authority confirmed that two Russian military aircraft, shadowed by a number of British fighter jets, flew through Irish controlled airspace off the west coast.

I've said it before...contract these dudes...*
Pimp four of those babies up with IAC roundels...strap on a couple of missiley things...pull up alongside Uri and Demetri...and flip them the bird.
Then listen to the radio transmissions.... 'Черт возьми Деметрий , где они получили те, от?'
*Just to caveat...I know I'm talking shoite but hey no harm in having a laugh. I'd still be an advocate for the Bae Hawk for the reasons outlined in a previous thread. Need to raise money to buy aircraft...said it before...sell Baldonnel...prime site...move the IAC aircraft to commercial airports.'History is a vast early warning system'. Norman Cousins

have either Mig-21's or F-5's got the legs for QRA and air policing work?
i fear 'X type is going cheap, stick some roundels and a pair of Sidewinders on it and we're sorted' is somewhat deluded. these aircraft are bargain bucket - compared to an F-16, Typhoon, Rafale, F/A-18E etc... for a reason, and i guess its not because F-16's et al have gold taps and granite worktops.

Either of the two can carry multiple drop tanks on top of a light load of AAMs and their inbuilt cannon. The more modern fighters you mentioned have every electronic doodah known to man and the appropriate weapons to go with them......apart from the fact that the plastic switches on an F-16 are charged for multiples of what the same switch on an Airbus costs. Avionics is what costs money but there is a huge element of "gold-plating" of the actual cost of common parts. You should have a read of the US General Accounting Office has to say about American arms procurement..........but that's not what we're talking about. A reworked F-5 or a -21 would do fine for what we need, ie, intercept and eyeball a Bear.

Then using the access door underneath the bear gain entry.
Unfortunately due to unexpected turbulence the pilot of the F117 would be unable to maintain a smooth connection with the bear, causing the entry port to suffer catastrophic failure, killing Steven Segal in the process and destroying the F117.
What's left of the crack commando unit with the encouragement of Kurt Russell would then use their guile and wits to overcome any Russian crew members left onboard with the help of stewardess Halle Berry.
The Bear, no doubt at this point damaged beyond repair can only be landed after a tense scene with Kurt Russell assuming the controls of the aircraft and being talked through landing procedure by a British Pilot on the ground. For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

In the meantime,[deciding to be serious about this thread despite the country I live in, with it's lazy, moronic, government] I have come down on the side of the Gripen as a minimum, with respect to our learned colleges above, the Mig 21 was never an outstanding aircraft, I don't expect age to have improved it... Apart from having one engine, [not a serious omission] there are a number of advantages to picking Saab's product, both practical and political.Last edited by Turkey; 20 February 2015, 14:41."We will hold out until our last bullet is spent. I'm assuming this is accurate but to purchase:
85 (overkill we probably need max 12)
Gripen NG (overkill we don't need its capabilities)
Without ammunition & missiles (or fuel)
At today's prices that € 4.73 billion
Say that divide by 7 to get 12 Gripen NGs is €675 million
If it is to be looked at leasing is the future

The government do what the people empower them to do, so its more about public apathy than anything else.Covid 19 is not over ....it's still very real..Hand Hygiene, Social Distancing and Masks.. keep safe
