  • I think the regular minimum is 6+2 1 seaters vs 2 seaters for training/conversion. Allows for attrition of 1.

    • it's not the same argument at all, not even close; we contribute to the EU budget and get money back, apart from the mutual trade we have with fellow EU members. I have no problem contributing to charities at home, for example the Vincent DePauls or Simon, but Ethiopia, forget it!

      • whoever's nearest! If a crew or a pilot go down in to the sea, then they are the equivalent of distressed mariners and any and all available craft will be expected to divert and try and save them, be they commercial vessels or even private ships or boats. Even commercial aircraft will relay comms or even conduct basic searches.

        • "Budget details proposed by the Nigerian government have revealed that their acquisition external link of three JF-17 fighters from Pakistan cost $15 million. "

There you go. Maybe a few of these at that price wouldnt break the bank as long as people dont mind using Chinese/Pakistani technology

That was just the initial cost... once the funds are secure the Nigerian prince will pay the remaining $50m...
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

                • This thread started due to Russian 'Bears' flyng in 'Irish Controlled Airspace' - and our lack of intercept aircraft (and the high cost of same = low possibility of the Air Corps getting such high-cost jets) ....

                  Aero L-159ALCA

(Cost = US > $10 million per airframe)

                  Max Speed = 936 km/h (581 mph)
                  Service Ceiling = 43,000 feet

                  Russian Bear TU-95

                  Max Speed = 830 km/h (516 mph)
Service Ceiling = 45,000 feet (old aircraft, i.e. probably no longer capable of cruising at this height)

                  Just sayin.

                  ....runs for cover

As an interceptor I would say no, it hasn't the speed or the range but ... as a point defence capable radar equipped light fighter with a more than decent air to ground capability there definitely isn't anything more cost effective available. A good stepping stone aircraft with actual capability. Just ask ISIS.

                    • Doesn't have the range

                      • The ALCA is fine as a point defence interceptor, but was never intended as anything else. If you have a secure location you want patroled, such as closed airspace, its ideal, but no different to something like a Hawk 200 or M346LCA/Yak 131.
Still just a Jet trainer with the instructor seat removed and replaced with avionics for weapons.

The biggest problem with kindd of stuff is not the limitations of the platform, it's the inability of the political class to live with them.

The words 'hospital ship' leap to mind - a condition of the mind that allows politicians to delude themselves that when you pay for peanuts you will get fillet Steak...

                            • Range, time to height, top speed....

None of them are what it takes to do air policing QRA, and if you sent it to trail a BEAR down the west coast it would burn so much fuel trying to keep up you'd need to buy a tanker to pug it into the whole way from Rockwall to Bantry Bay...
