Please keep to topic; for reference, the topic is rescues in the Med . A valid debate around defence naval capabilities is worth having, just not in this thread.
"Are they trying to shoot down the other drone? "

"No, they're trying to fly the tank"

Again its not the DF who are at fault but the politcos, civil servants and therefore the citizenry of the state.
Could not agree more with you on this one, so what is your answer to change things?

    There isn't an answer

    Its not fixable.

No political will to take it on as there is no sense of national defence from the citizens of the country.

Once you understand how e have got to this point since independence and look how it happened, there isn't a way back or even a way forward.

Presently with our P63 we are exercising with the Italian navy, including close approach for simulated/live RAS. These exercises will show over time any shortfalls in our equipments, procedures, and communications. It is an opportunity to note any modifications for implementation in our current or future ships.
Modern OPV's of 90metres and above can be equipped to a light frigate status and improve it's survivability in unexpected hot encounters on overseas missions. Going forward the uniformed Branch must lay down Naval capabilities and not be influenced by the Civil Service.

could a P60 class take stanflex type modules on deck without any other pre fitting strengthening of the deck, work in lower decks?
"He is an enemy officer taken in battle and entitled to fair treatment."
"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

The STANFLEX modules are a very specific design, not even matching an ISO standard. They are design to fit inside a special mission bay and cannot just be bolted onto a deck. Even if they could they only contain a weapons system and without the necessary sensors and control systems they are useless. Upgrading the P60 class beyond their current capability would need first to look at a whole package of measures.

Stanflex system is a Royal Danish navy concept of fitting stainless steel containers into slots aboard various vessels to allow for a multirange of roles change. The selected weapon system is fitted on top of the unit which is about 8ft in height and is placed by a 15tonne crane. In situ it is connected to all appropriate ship systems and is controlled by operations room consoles and systems. Fitting takes about an hour but training is a much longer operation. It came about while trying to replace a 22 ship navy with a flexible fleet combining everything from ASW, AAD, Strike capability, and coping with ICE Operations. A twin 30mm with FCS on each of our ships to cover the after end is doable as is looking at the use of MANPADS in air defence.

Safe at least. Saw a video last night on BBC news via Orla Guerin from Tripoli where she got unfettered access to a migrant holding camp in a mostly enclosed warehouse. There were some thousands rounded up both on arrival from SubSahara and interestingly hundreds who were turned back at sea by the EU trained Libyan CG. The women and children are held in a separate facility. She spoke to some of them telling stories of ill treatment and starvation. The recorded meal distribution was a 6" bread roll and a one person pat of Flora or similar. Drinking water controlled and only issued. Some held up there bread rolls in defiance, making "is this it" gestures. The Libyans are pissed off as the "Prisoners" need repatriation but nobody is leading the process. Job for UN ?

Operation Sophia begins with L.E. Niamh next month.
Well, there's good news and bad news. The bad news is that Neil will be taking over both branches, and some of you will lose your jobs. Those of you who are kept on will have to relocate to Swindon, if you wanna stay. I know, gutting. On a more positive note, the good news is, I've been promoted, so... every cloud. You're still thinking about the bad news aren't you?

With Niamh staying down till just before Christmas is this the latest we've been in the Med? Thought before we ended October/November period, and also with moving to Sophia are we going to be maintaining a year round deployment or is Niamh going to be the last till Spring next year?

Pontius closed during winter for us as few made the crossing. Sophia has a different mission and plucking survivors from the med in small boats is no longer the primary role.
Weather conditions will no lo get play as much of a part.
