Small steps. Piloting larger more expensive but capable platforms will come easier. Capability development, procedures and training are the hard yards

But why the suggestion of "developing" our own systems? There are plenty of designs from commercial to military out there, why not save the money and just buy a proven hardware set?

Thought the Egyptians detained the ship due to paperwork issues off Suez?

It's an Irish thing called reinventing the wheel .
Don't spit in my Bouillabaisse .

Even so why not by a NATO standard established hardware that we can use and leverage off of others developing rather than how this could turn out?

I'm in no way advocating developing a UAV platform from scratch. There is ample platforms available commercially that are far superior than any UAV Ireland Inc can deliver.

Capability development is what you can do when you get the technology, training, procedures, processes and systems in the right mix and apply it successfully for an operational effect.

Achieving capability requires more than purchasing equipment. It relies on multiple inputs and their combined effects

                          • IMERC isn't about developing solutions for Irish problems.

IMERC is about collaboration between industry, education and the NS.

It is above leveraging all their expertise.

Ideally they want an Irish made marketable product at the end that will sell well. It doesn't mean the NS will buy it or even that it will be Irish made, it is more about R&D

                            • I have no problem with reinventing the wheel if you then improve it and sell it.
                              Honda
                              Samsung
                              Huawei.
                              Imitate, learn, improve.

Of course, if you start out with the idea of "sure we are only Irish and doing this because we assume we can't afford the best and don't need it anyway" then you've already wasted time and money.
Ditto if you incubate a Timoney then ditch it because it actually works.

In a country that should be spending 3 billion on Defence as a starting point but gets......
                              Well, I'm not optimistic.

                              • I'd argue that imerc was more a marketing exercise for the current COS, CIT and UCC than R&D and trying to develop Irish industry
