Western Europe? I assume by "America" you mean the USA as distinct from Cuba. With Turkey ruled out as not being "Western Europe" I assume you don't mean NATO ..... Switzerland?
"The West" is a meaningless term up there with "whatever you're having yourself" ..... not in my name thanks.

Cuba is not a democracy, neither is Venezuela, yet they are in America (the continent...). They are not "western" by the generally accepted definition, while Canada is.
There are exceptions to this, as with anything: Australia and New Zealand can be considered "western" by their cultures, values and attachment to the western way of life, even though they are nowhere near traditional "western" countries.

Right now, I'm having some popcorn... later we will go celebrate Oktoberfest with friends at a german restaurant. I'll be having schnitzel. You can have whatever you like, in your own name...

Mike Jackson got promoted to C.O S and had no qualms with Gulf 2 during his tenure as C O S yet afterwards in his book " Soldier" felt that in such an event in future it would be better if Britain sat on the fence a bit rather than following the US in a blind/craven manner into conflict. He made no mention at all in his book about the RIR Col who got hung out by the media for his stint on Telic eventhough he rang him personally to plead with him not to go public to defend himself against the media mud campaign despite the BA etc making no effort to do so.

Wes Clarke is a perennial US Presidential candidate hopeful.

The tendency for the generalship to suddenly start objecting to wars, various, involvement, British soldiers, one or two, for the use of, well after they have retired, have secured a fat pension and a few Directorships in defence companies has been noted. Jackson was even mocked in the callow Press for getting the bags under his eyes face-lifted. Blunt went on to be what he really wanted to be, which is a singer of twee songs, beloved on college first-years/buskers everywhere...

His unit was given the assignment of securing the Pristina International Airport in advance of the 30,000-strong peacekeeping force; however the Russian army had moved in and taken control of the airport before his unit's arrival. American NATO commander Wesley Clark ordered that Blunt's unit forcibly take the airport from the Russian contingent. However, after Blunt queried the order, Mike Jackson, Blunt's superior officer, and Blunt himself refused to comply fearing greater consequences, with Jackson stating that they were "not going to start the Third World War" for Clark.[19][20][21] The airport would eventually be shared peacefully by Blunt's unit and the Russians. There were less intense moments during Blunt's Kosovo assignment. Blunt had brought along his guitar, strapped to the outside of his tank. At some places, the peacekeepers would share a meal with hospitable locals, and Blunt would perform. It was while on duty there that he wrote the song "No Bravery".[22]"

Lt/Capt (not sure what he was at the time) Jimmy Sharp's unit?

He wasn't the GOC of 5 Abn Bde!

He was in HCav so it would have involved his Scimitar being put in a Hercules or under a Chinook.

Probably some advisors to the ANA. This was a CAS mission, so the tgt was not processed through the targeting process.

Very sad, but these things happen in conflict. Investigate, learn and apply the lessons, and carry on...

Let's be fair here, Afghanistan isn't the fast-pace job that it was 6 years ago. Yes, a CAS mission by passes the targetting suite as routine practice, but why should it be like that now, now that there isn't the same demand for fire missions that there was between Herrick 5-13?

VLADIMIR Putin has dispatched his most elite special forces team to Syria to hunt down and wipe out Islamic State (ISIS) militants.

The Russian supremo ordered the deployment of soldiers from his fearsome Spetsnaz unit to root out and eliminate packs of fleeing jihadis.

A battalion of elite paratroopers also ghosted into the war-torn country this week as Putin ramps up his assault on the Islamist fanatics and rebel forces fighting to topple dictator Bashar al-Assad.
Interesting play by the Russians if its true. Less public outcry in Russian about boots on the ground than in the west and perhaps a willingness on the Russians part to accept losses

If the Russians can keep Assad going they will have friends in Syria, Iran and Iraq. Russia then become a big player in the Middle East
You're even dumber than I tell people

You might have been infected but you never were a bore

Turkey should blow the russian planes out of the sky for incursions.
