      • In the book Warship 2006, Eur Ing David K Brown, writes about his close involvement with the design of the 'Castle ' Class OPV,

It could be argued at 75 m these were the fore runner to the modern large OPVs such as those that the NS use to this day.

After the Castles had entered service a report was developed around the design of a Anti Submarine based Corvette using the Castles as a starting point. Multiple bolt on packages including a towed array sonar to work in tandem with anti submarine assets such as Seakings.

the total add on package drove the cost per unit up by £25 million sterling, per unit, as the ships had been built to a civilian standard many operating systems were not compatible bolt on systems. In order to achieve the level of quietness involved for A/S war fare and stability of systems required to operate A/S the Ships HAD to be built in specialized yards as opposed to Hall Russell and commercial yards.

However the full cost would have been less than a third of a Frigate. The project was well received but the Navy , in the authors words " probably rightly" thought that the government would treat it as a frigate and thus reduce the build of actual purpose designed frigates.

This highlights my original point that if you want Frigates or ships designed and equipped to be specialist AS or AA assets they need to be designed from the outset as such and bolt on and conversion of existing non purpose designed assets have potentially huge downfalls including the misdirection of funds that could be diverted to building specialized warships.

As our ships have been all built to Lloyds Register standards as opposed to a Military spec are they capable of straightforward conversion to accept the type of packages suggested.

Straightforward answer is no! OPVs even Heli capable ones are not frigates under any guise from start of build so anything less that a purposely designed vessel for the ops suggested is a waste of money.

What we have on our current ships in the line of weapons fits is the best that can be offered on that build, they are what they are Large Offshore Patrol vessels a job which their weapons fit is quite adequate...and affordable.

        • You are right in saying what we have is affordable and is a standard beancounters evaluation. ALL naval ships built at commercial yards are built to LR to cover insurance for the period of Dockyard guarantee, thereafter they are covered by the National Exchequer . We have full W/T integrity with ability to float with two adjacent compartments flooded plus 1hr fire route integrity. What we lack are elements of response and these MUST be put right.

It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.
