    EAS expansion

    Can't find the relevant thread

    PfG:
".... committed to the expansion of the Emergency Aeromedical Service (air ambulance) and it's possible extension to nighttime. A feasibility study will be carried out to explore how this might be achieved, who might provide it and the potential cost. This shall include consideration of a second base."

two levels of political jockeying will happen; every TD will knife his mother to get a helicopter based in his or her town and Donners will knife their mother to get the operation going in the first place, as it keeps jobs inhouse, generates more need for aircraft resources (hence more justification) and keeps nasty contract pilots and mechs out. Win win all round. Let the games begin.

    Except:

    - there probably isn't enough pilots to do it safely especially 24/7
    - the EAS / HEMS operation (as we have seen) is risky
    - no Western country AFAIK allows flights to the scene at night (it isn't just risky, it is dangerous)
    - we already have MEDEVAC 112 and 5 IRCG helos on the job
    - HSE / NATS are actually laughing AFAIK they aren't billed by either AC or IRCG

Night EAS/HEMS would only be allowed to (and from) surveyed and lit sites.

Also this won't change the length of time it takes the initial ground paramedic/AP to get to the patient before EAS is activated (I think a doctor can also request EAS but not 100%)

NI have awarded a contract to Babcock to provide a HEMS service with 2 X EC135 for 3 years (with an additional 2 years as an option) with a doctor and paramedic

As I understand it not initially. But yes further down the line. One to be based at Enniskillen, one based at Aldegrove.

Minister Harris is reputed to have told a gathering in Roscommon today that night ops are being considered for the EAS.

Great news for NI and the island as a whole and I'm sure the NIAS will work closely with the NAS/ EAS. Interesting that the service is charity based - interesting to see how that will work out?

Sure are - and they work very well but from a much larger population base. Was mooted here too in the early days but not sure how much traction it would get in the Republic at the moment!

as someone who knows nothing really about this why is the DF flying EAS when there is a bunch of big red and white hellcopters at every corner of the land ?
"Are they trying to shoot down the other drone? "

"No, they're trying to fly the tank"

the power of DF lobbying, really. No reason why a completely civvy organisation can't do it, of course.

Well, there's good news and bad news. The bad news is that Neil will be taking over both branches, and some of you will lose your jobs. Those of you who are kept on will have to relocate to Swindon, if you wanna stay. I know, gutting. On a more positive note, the good news is, I've been promoted, so... every cloud. You're still thinking about the bad news aren't you?

IIRC those AWs and EC's were bought for Military work not EAS . Not taking away from the work
