    • She remains in commission though. Her crew have not been reassigned for the duration of refit.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

      • As bad as the crisis is, think this is the most attention the DF numbers have been getting in public and politics for years at this stage.

The ship is undergoing a major refurbishment which includes getting at outer hull . Which may include stripping out paneling and some cabins. Some describe it as a type of retrofit. Cannot believe her crew are there cluttering up the target work spaces. Does anybody know what the specification of work extends to and for how long.?

              • Isn't that normal with DSG? Looks like she is getting a full grit blast and new coat of paint. It may sound simple, but the h&s required for that task make much of the ship inaccessable for the duration. After almost 20 yars in service, she deserves a freshen up. I wonder will they make any changes in the bridge?

The thread includes future and my analysis over the past few days, taken together with manning levels, is an unhappy prediction for the Naval seagoing capacity within the next 2/3 years-or sooner.
With the tie up of Eithne, and Orla , we must allow for a rollover period for manning catch up to potentially allow those ships to become operational, however they will be older and may be joined by Ciara, and consequentially they are in the terminal ward. We must accept they are operationally gone.
We will then have 6 ships with two of those built about 20 years ago . One is in long , long, refit repair leaving us with 5 ships, however Niamh will need her DSG treatment soonest and Roisin is still not available. Those later two ships at 20 years may also be in the terminal ward especially if they were built cheaply from 25 year steel. It seems therefore that the Four Newest ships are the Navy and any improvements can only come from New build or acquisition. The Defence Budget system is crippling the PDF and is failing to keep frontline responses feasible.

                    • From 9 ships to 4 ships in the space of a year is quite some achievement. I trust the media are being suitably congratulatory...

Three ships built in the early 1980's (1982-1983 ) +- so no crib there. The main thrust is to see that the twenty year olds are extended by intensive refit and retrofit , otherwise within 5 years we are down to 4 and policy propose 9 ships. Get building and buying again. More planning for type training to expand Naval capabilities to include modern maintenance of sea lanes-MCM, NSM, AGW etc., etc..

                          • Everything has consequences. If you have to mothball 2 ships because of lack of crews then your ability to do "extra-curricular" overseas missions gets called into questions. Wait for the DOD's response when the DF goes looking for money for the EPV "You don't have the crews so why do you need it?"

Leo, Paul and DoD effectively punishing the entire Naval Service in response to the only member of general equivalent rank with the Moral Courage and Leadership to do what was required.

This will now increase the speed of the exodus of personnel from the Naval Service because any hope of additional income from overseas allowances is effectively gone.
