Not really a valid reason to keep a rather under-utilised and out of date facility open.

Bearing in mind "emergency housing for homeless" is not a military of even DoD remit. More of the usual Irish cheap alternative solution methodology rather than the responsible Depts actually dealing with the issue properly.

Don't even mention some of the issues that have arisen within the hospital due to same said persons being accommodated in the facility.
An army is power. Its entire purpose is to coerce others. This power can not be used carelessly or recklessly. This power can do great harm. We have seen more suffering than any man should ever see, and if there is going to be an end to it, it must be an end that justifies the cost. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain

I'm sure there's probably families living in the vicinity of the camp whose kids attend school there, who would otherwise have to attend school in Newbridge or Kildare town. Plus the convenience of service personnel being able to drop kids to school in the camp. But yep, unsure why there are two primary schools in the camp?

Having schools for small children in the vicinity of an munitions/explosive dump is not a good idea.

Isn't there a school in Brownstown also?
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

And Ballysax, Cut Bush, Green Road (x2) Athgarvan, It is very difficult to access the Camp without passing by or near a school. Hard to see why the DoD is supplying three sites within the DFTC for schools when accomodation is in short supply for regular DF needs.

Thought this was the most suitable thread to post this in. Report from 1999. Interesting the PWC DF Review recommended strength and organisation as mentioned in this report as against where the DF currently stands...

8500 was 1 Bde and I think a "task force" for Dublin (not sure what that consisted of)

Did the ECF consider a proper Defence organisation or was it just cuts?

State to offer public land to developers to ease housing crisis.

If the issue of listed structures could be worked over, there could be potential scope to include Bricins, Civil Defence yard (Collins Bks) and Cathal Brugha Bks for sale. I see in the news that Harold's Cross Greyhound stadium is closing and being sold also.

Try building some greater density in the city footprint that exists. Dublin is both extremely low density and spreading like a cancer.

McNamara got half of bricins and did fk all with it before going bust , Clancy lay idle for many years and is only now going mad strength - remember Defence portfolio has been utterly ravaged , the one new barracks - Cavan - was sold on

I wouldn't call it a cancer a conglomeration is the correct word.

In some ways the further it spreads the better as it means more jobs over a wider area (but still most of those will be in the city centre.

If we could sort out the public transport we'd be laughing!

It is too costly and too slow

Mind where you go. Johannesburg city ( not metro) covers about three times the area
Of Dublin city ( not metro) at less than twice the population. But nearly twice the density of population. ( amazing How much space roads start to take up to move that many people). How much space will Dublin city take up... Never mind the metro... If it reaches the same population level at the current density? Non-Dublin will be a park west of the Shannon!

                            Army Barracks
                            41. Deputy Eamon Ryan asked the Taoiseach and Minister for Defence the barracks in use in Dublin; the deployment of forces between those barracks; and if there are plans for an amalgamation or co-ordination of the resources in this regard. [3450/18]

Minister of State at the Department of Defence (Deputy Paul Kehoe): There are four permanently occupied military installations in Dublin. These are located at Cathal Brugha Barracks (Rathmines), McKee Barracks (Blackhorse Avenue), St. Bricin's Hospital (Infirmary Road) and Casement Aerodrome (Baldonnel).

For operational and security reasons, details of troop numbers at each location cannot be disclosed. It should be noted however that the number of personnel stationed at a particular location will frequently vary as it is a normal operational feature for there to be a constant through-flow of personnel into and out of military installations on an ongoing basis.

The Defence property portfolio is kept under review to ensure the most effective use of resources having regard to the roles assigned by Government to the Defence Forces. However, there are currently no plans to close or amalgamate any permanently occupied military installations.

Questions Nos. 42 and 43 answered with Question No. 10.

Eamonn Ryan has an angle on something given his questions lately, too bad he's getting inaccurate figures from the MfS answers

This lack of clear answers due to "operational and security reasons" is BS.

The same Minister gave detailed troop numbers in Custume Barracks on several occasions.
