9th as in a total of 9 in the fleet (since Niamh was purchased there has been 8 in the fleet)

Who pissed in your cornflakes sir? All your recent posts have been depressingly negative.
                Lighten up. Be positive.

By the end of next year there will be in the irish Naval Service:
                4 x P60 type.
                2 x P50 type
                2 x P40 type
                1 x P30 type.

No matter what way you add that up, the total comes to 9, and the white paper (which sets out defence policy) has committed to replacing hull for hull as the P30 and P40 class retire. The Strategy statement has copperfastened this. The only question is what the P30 and P40 replacements will look like.

For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Must have missed a commissioning lately.

                      All the P30s are decommissioned.

                      There is:
                      Eithne
                      Ciara
                      Orla
                      Roisin
                      Niamh
                      Samuel Beckett
                      James Joyce
                      William Butler Yeats

The 4th of the Beckett class won't be in service till 2018.

Eithne is the P30.....P31 to be exact.
All the P20's are decommissioned. When P64 enters service, there will be no ship decommissioned.
Two ships are required to replace the P40's, and one will be required to replace the Flagship, that will leave a 9 ship fleet.

When a design is approved for P31, and a tender issued, it will be interesting to see if an option for a second is included. That would be the first hint at a 10 ship fleet.

I see now where danno got his negativity from. Post edited to reflect what I meant to say.
