  • Belgium to procure French Scorpion vehicles

Belgium's Council of Ministers announced on 22 June that it had approved the procurement of 60 Jaguar armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) and 417 Griffon light combat vehicles currently under development in France.

The EUR1.1 billion (USD1.23 billion) procurement will also see Belgian and French training and logistical support jointly organised and the new vehicles enter service between 2025 and 2030. It is the largest land forces procurement programme within Belgium's Strategic Vision defence plan - released in June 2016 - for the component's manoeuvre, combat support, and combat service support units.

The two vehicle types will replace the Piranha and Dingo fleets currently in service and are to be procured through a government-to-government contract with France. The two new vehicle types are being developed in France by a partnership of Nexter Systems, Renault Trucks Defense and Thales Communication

The Griffon is the first of the two vehicles scheduled to enter production, currently planned for 2018, with the Jaguar set to follow in 2020. The Griffon is to be procured in APC, medical, and reconnaissance variants, with the Jaguar armed with a 40 mm cased telescoped cannon-armed turret and two MBDA MMP anti-tank missiles, in addition to a remote weapon station.
