    Passchendale, 3rd Ypres 100 years.

Did I miss it or did the national broadcaster completely ignore all of the Centenary ceremonies in Ypres over the last few days, in which a number of Irish Defence Forces officers played key parts?
Maread McGuinness MEP was also in attendence.

After the Last Post on Sunday night, an inspiring pageant took place outside the Cloth Hall in Ypres. It culminated with a projection on the walls of the building at the end of the war, almost completely demolished. It was rebuilt completely, brick by brick.

Well done to the Defence Forces people who participated, and their superiors for having the far sightedness to permit it.

Possibly we'll never know for sure how many people from the Island of Ireland were killed during this battle. Many Irish had emigrated to Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Great Britain before the war, and joined up with their local regiment at its outbreak. Their nationality is listed based on the home address they gave. There is however a memorial to those of the Royal Munster Fusiliers outside the Cathedral in the town. This says a lot about the impact their presence had locally.
Well, there's good news and bad news. The bad news is that Neil will be taking over both branches, and some of you will lose your jobs. Those of you who are kept on will have to relocate to Swindon, if you wanna stay. I know, gutting. On a more positive note, the good news is, I've been promoted, so... every cloud. You're still thinking about the bad news aren't you?

On Friday, 18 Aug at 16:00 hrs, a memorial will be unveiled on Frezenberg Ridge, to commemorate the Irish who fought at Passachendaele. The project is a joint venture between the Royal Dublin Fusiliers Association and local Flemish volunteers
. It has been funded by voluntary subscription from RDFA members and has been generously supported by all of the Irish Regimental Associations, including the Irish Guards.
