Denmark in the past was overrun in five hours by the Germans. Unlike us they learn from the past.

They shouldn't be. Ireland was invaded many times, but never by the British.
Well, there's good news and bad news. The bad news is that Neil will be taking over both branches, and some of you will lose your jobs. Those of you who are kept on will have to relocate to Swindon, if you wanna stay. I know, gutting. On a more positive note, the good news is, I've been promoted, so... every cloud. You're still thinking about the bad news aren't you?

IIRC, Danish troops put up a token defense against the Wehrmacht, despite being refused permission to deploy, knocking out a few vehicles with those Madsen 20mm cannons we had on our landsverk tanks. The government wanted to avoid a pitched hopeless battle.
On the other hand, when orders to make Danish Jews wear the Star of David came down, the queen lead the whole population into wearing them in solidarity. They later managed to sealift the entire Jewish population to Sweden to avoid deportation to the camps.

Denmark has allocated $3.5 billion for its defense budget in 2017. The defense proposal, if implemented, would scale up year-by-year spending and increase the military’s annual budget by $770 million to $4.27 billion in 2023.
This is just for ONE medium combined arms expeditionary brigade.

Yet Ireland's Govt deludes itself and the public into thinking that it has two brigades and a pseudo dftc brigade. Worst of all most in the military believe it too

Denmark. 1 million more people than Ireland, comparable unemployment and GDP. Lower debt.
Of course at current rates the Irish economy will catch up with and overtake Denmark within 5 years and in that time Irish debt will be significantly lower. We can afford to let the army take a back seat to some degree, but there is no reason we cannot aspire to a navy at least the equal of Denmark. By 2030 the only reason the Danish chief of staff won’t be looking at the Irish Defence forces with envy is inertia and the irrational belief that somehow we just can’t.

Planning for 2023 and even 2030 should have started if that was the case.

Using GDP in comparing our economy with the Danes is nonsense, we've a million + that pay no tax and we've the multinationals inflating the numbers
Everyone who's ever loved you was wrong.

That’s a good point and was worth investigating.
Instead I looked at government revenue, current and predicted.
The Danish government takes in and spends slightly more than twice the money Ireland does. They spend just over three times the amount on defence.
Forecasts from a website called tradingeconomics.com, make of it what you will, have Ireland closing the gap by about four percentage points in the next three years to slightly less than twice our income.

Their Defence budget for 2017 was about €2.9 billion and that figure includes pensions and capital expenditure so should be compared to our total defence vote including capital expenditure of €921 million for this year. To be equivalent we would have to have spent €1.39 billion. They still have more...fiscal space than we do, but I reckon that within 5 years we will have the space.

Very good film on it called "April 9th".

Another popular legend concerned the supposed flying of the German flag over the Hotel d'Angleterre (then being used as the Germany military headquarters in Copenhagen). The king riding by and seeing the flag, tells a German sentry that this is a violation of the armistice agreement and that the flag must be taken down. The sentry replies that this will not be done. The king then says if the flag is not taken down, he will send a Danish soldier to take it down. The sentry responds, "The soldier will be shot." The king replies "the Danish soldier will be me." According to the story, the flag was taken down.
