The Infantry Weapons Wing conducted the 3rd International Marksmanship Skills Competition from 25 to 29 June in the Glen of Imaal Training Area. This competition hosted 14 National and International Sniper teams who competed over 4 days in a number of shooting based stands that tested marksmanship, physical robustness, communication and teamwork.
The International teams included 2 Rifles (UK), Irish Guards (UK), US Air Force and 2 Cavalry Regiment, US Army. The Army Ranger Wing represented the Defence Forces in the International Category. Sniper teams were challenged by 10 scored events that included Rifle and Pistol shooting, alternative position shooting, night shooting and combat fitness stands.
The week culminated in a Stress shoot which involved a 5km run through a series of shooting stands carrying all the sniper team equipment. Temperatures soared to 30 degrees as Sniper teams dealt with physically and mentally challenging events under time pressure.
