  • are the BSMs not giving the feedback?

Is a major issue the fact that boards don’t have NCOs???

    Comment

    • I suppose the BSM only gets as far as the OC and the occasional Brig Gen, depending on personalities. Once all the colon-els and above get together nobody cares about the opinion of the troops on the ground.
It would make sense to have a Senior Sgt Maj at General staff level, as all arms of the UK armed forces have managed to do recently. One OR9 for arm of the DF, answering directly to the CoS?
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

big issue regards practicalness will be how scuffed and worn the fabric becomes and more importantly how the barrack fashion police view this.
no doubt some BSM, etc. will issue a hair brained order for boots to be polished, not worn outside barracks, not worn on grass, etc, etc. to make sure they stay new out of the box looking for GOCs.

if the single pair issue is the case it will raise serious issues or higher ups will have to relax about how boots physically look after a while.

Tender out in February of last year.Still no sign of them, probably because someone realised they were a disaster, and the guy who came up with the idea is now a civvy and will never wear them!!

How have we gone from Sgt Majors being the problem to Sgt Majors being the solution in the space of a page or so?

A lot depends on the personality in the post
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
          Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

It also depends on what the post is: is it to speak truth to power, or is it to make stupid shit sound plausible?

It's not just the bloke doing the job, it's the people who choose him and who he speaks to.

It's a job for a big bloke with tour gongs coming out of his arse and who's in his last post before leaving the Army. Even then it's a difficult job that requires having a boss who wants to hear unwelcome truths.

Maybe. As has been said the BSM at unit level only tend to have the ear of their own OC and perhaps the GoC. Maybe an SMA is what's needed to do the same at DFHQ level.
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

              • Got my hands on the new boots for a look today. Look good but still not convinced they will be durable enough for use on exercise etc.
No maintenance kit issued with them either.

On the plus side I also got a look at the new kit bag. Olive green version of the British issue "Black bag".

                • Some Photos of the new boots in use here.
Defence Forces Conduct Mission Readiness Exercise in Preparation for UNIFIL (Lebanon) Deployment The 113th Infantry Battalion are entering their final phase of three months of intensive training in preparation for their forthcoming deployment to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in early November. The deployment of the 113th Infantry Battalion will see 452 Irish troops rotate to South Lebanon next month in what is Ireland’s largest overseas deployment to a single mission area for several years. The Mission Readiness Exercise puts commanders and soldiers through a series of demanding scenarios based on potential threats that may be encountered in the mission area. Troops will be asked to secure, extract and evacuate personnel involved in a complex situational narrative.

Still no word on what the plan is with regard to what they are replacing though.Frustrating.

                          • Green Haix aircrew boot is currently being trialled.

There is also new dark tank/brown flying clothing being trialled which looks absolutely hideous with no benefit over what is already on issue.
