  • British Soldiers Combat Loads

Interesting thread and chart giving Loads British soldiers carry for different mission types. How do these compare to the Irish Army?

I’d say it would be similar but BA could be more due to more body armour and specialist kit

    AFAIK it hasn’t been studied

Never been quantified. I know during training the baseline weight for us is usually 35 Pounds in CEFO (Vest and Patrol pack) less Body armour for Battle PT.
Probably because someone somewhere decided to copy the Wing's standard for their Part 3 Fitness test.

It would be interesting if someone did a study of it but the weight would have to be based on standard issue kit. Also in these days of Mission command and Fight Light the tables above would be based on what the weights are if you carry every item proscribed on a packing list.We should be moving away from that now.

Meanwhile a more indepth look at British weights.http://quarryhs.co.uk/BritishArmyEquipmentWeights.pdf

"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.
