  • Russian Agression in Sea of Azof

Now details are still a little unclear, but I understand a Russian Naval vessel rammed a Ukranian Tug.
This was one of a series of encounters. Currently a merchant vessel is completely blocking the bridge over the Kerch Strait, preventing any vessel from entering or leaving. SU25 Frogfoots (Russian A10 comparable aircraft) are buzzing the bridge.
Most recent incident about an hour ago has seen a Russian Naval vessel firing on a Ukrainian naval vessel, damaging the vessel and injuring a crewman.

For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

    More details.

Ukraine's navy says Russia has opened fire and seized three of its vessels off the coast of the annexed Crimea, in a major escalation of tensions.
It said two gunboats and a tug were captured by Russian special forces after a chase. Two Ukrainian crew members were injured.
Russia is yet to comment on the claims.
It earlier accused Ukraine of illegally entering Russian waters, blocking access to the Sea of Azov with a tanker put under a bridge in the Kerch Strait.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called an urgent meeting of his "war cabinet", his spokesperson said.

Ukraine names Russia as 'aggressor' state
Tensions have risen in the seas off the Crimean peninsula - annexed by Russia in 2014 - in recent months.
In a statement, the Ukrainian navy said the Berdyansk and the Nikopol gunboats were hit and disabled as they tried to leave the area.
It said the tug was forced to stop.
Russia earlier scrambled two fighter jets and two helicopters to monitor the Ukrainian vessels.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Some Russian TV commentators (very brave ones) are suggesting this action is due to Putin's popularity being low.
Russian state TV is saying "Unnamed powers in Washington" staged the provocation to dustupt the upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin at the G20 in Argentina.
Given the state of the Ukraine Navy, this seems like a huge gamble, if true.

I am also seeing reports from Ham Radio enthusaists that there has been severe jamming of HF all day.

It depends how you translate it. Voyennoye Polozhenie.(Вое́нное положе́ние)
Ukranians are saying "State of Emergency" or "Martial Law".

Don't take the HF jamming reports too seriously - once a conflict kicks off, people start listening and linking every noise with the conflict.

I see one of the reports talked of 20kHz "jamming" on 8-9MHz - I can pretty much bet that was just an Over the Horizon Radar and likely, British.

That said, we're in an interesting place. Winter is arriving and Europe needs Russian gas.

Well, at least we've got level headed people in power and both NATO and the EU are unified and free from internal strife.
