ROFL.Brilliant.Retort post of the year."Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

That Ukrainian ad is greatI knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.
In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

I have visited Ukraine regularly with work over the past 3 years and while I haven't been watching their TV channels (can't understand the language) I have noticed that every other billboard is an advertisement for the military. I have also noted a lot more uniforms on the street and the area I visit is in the Transcarpathian region which is on the western side of the country and very far from the front.

A recent newpaper report stated that recruitment was so far below norms in the Ukrainian Army (no-one wants to fight the Russians, as the strong possibility of getting killed exists) that a hurried campaign to enlist people was created, yet the public of recruitment age has stayed away in droves. The average Ukrainian has zero faith in the Government and corruption is rampant so people are voting with their feet.
