  • 90 years of the Reserves.

As per the COS new years message, this year marks 90 years since the foundation of what is now the Army Reserve and Naval Service Reserve.

How should/do you think this momentous occasion in our Defence Forces history be celebrated?

The way things are going, it looks as if the plan is for disbandment....
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

I wonder if it will be on the same scale as the 100 year commemoration of the forming of Óglaigh na hÉireann back in 2013.

Of course not. 90 isn't as big an occasion as 100.

How about a parade where the current formations march ahead of the people who were in the RDF up to 2005?

Presentation of special commemorative sandbags to all members serving during 2019

I wonder would all the ex members kick up as much a fuss about getting one as other exers did about the 1916-2016 medal.

(Sorry lads couldn't help it. The occasion should certainly be marked though. If it wasn't for the RDF we wouldn't be able to function these days.)
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

Are we doing a 90yr celebration as we do not expect the RDF to make it to the 100yr mark?

That was the original plan but it got shifted to match with the 90th. Unless it has got changed back again ?

I think those dates are now for the NSR only. Army Reserve moved to April to coincide with the 90th anniversary publicity.

Open to correction on all of this as details emerge.
