  • Binkov's Battlegrounds 'Could the EU military conquer the UK?'

Interesting sandbox type video on what UK versus the rest of Europe would look like. What does everyone think of the 'Ireland campaign' aspects? Videos are usually pretty well informed and researched.

'British Royal Army' aside of course!

doctrinally and politically the UK wouldn't be interested - infact far more likely is a consolidation of UK land forces onto the mainland: to a large extent we'd follow Soviet doctrine of WW2, or Syrian doctrine from the civil war and reduce our exposure and logistics chains. air and sea power would be the method we would use to keep the wolf from the door, not land power with a huge logistical tail that both requires far too much protection and is far too easy to interdict. the Israelis show the wisdom of this - a fast jet acting as flying artillery can be over the Golan at 6am, and over the Sinai at midday, whereas a Tank regiment at Shannon is kind of stuck there, and even if not fighting is hoovering up huge logistic resources just sitting there.

if an EU force managed to position itself in Ireland, it still needs to get across the water - that, and the beachead, as demonstrated time and time again - are appallingly dangerous choke points. its far more effective to save the flying artillery and the RN for interdiction of something thats already difficult enough.

a second, huge benefit of the 'Useful Britain' doctrine is that the EU force gets to deal with NI. staging an opposed amphibious landing is one thing, doing it with a low level insurection at your back door is something else entirely...

Exactly my thoughts. Militarily it makes no sense to try hang onto the North and invade the South. Politically though, would the British not have to view Enniskillen as being the same as Finchley? It leaves open the interesting scenario where the bulk of British forces are retained on the 'mainland' and Ireland as an invading European state moving on Northern Ireland. How would the Irish Defence Forces fare attacking into the North against just the forces already there with reserves and assuming very limited reinforcement from the rest of the UK to hold the line. Maybe just the use of the 'flying artillery' and the addition of few artillery batteries? All fantastical of course.
