    Good pictures Gunner.

The pic of the 2 Grn Ord Coy Bedford is an eye opener alright !!!

Of course the tradition of 14" wheels is continuing as seen on the LDV
Convoy minibuses which the DF still has a few of !!!

Don't recognise the location in the second last picture. Am guessing Clonmel
    or Kilkenny ?

Have been in both locations only once, so am not sure

Nice sandblaster. Is it easy to start, or did you have to take flying lessons first?

The Green Deauvilles could be spotted on the news yesterday at the closing of Longford.

Thanks for posting the link Goldie.

Saw it on the news the other night alright.

End of an era is certainly right !!!

Have several happy memories of Annual Training in Longford down the
    years.....

Fantastic Photos. Just shows how much the DF seem to be dropping the ball when it comes to motorcycles, apart from for 2 Cav.
Have not seen any more about the tender for the off road bikes mentioned earlier that was advertised late last year.

Richard S. is now world famous.....

Love the Citroen Mehari from the older shots.

Nice of you to finally let us have an insight to some of those millions of photos you took over the years.

While not a particular fan of bikes it is intersting to cross reference the other vehicles in the back round . Especially the AMls, Bedfords and Landrovers.. now all these I do like.

Is it really Matt? What's the point in that?
The Chrome exhausts and many other shinythings kinda cancel out any pretence of tacticality, apart from the bike being very much designed to stay very much on black between grey, and not brown between green.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0712/commemoration_av.html

Just checked again, it most definitely is not matt. What you may see is the lower half of the pannier, which is by design non shiny.

Interesting to see them devoid of almost all manufacturers decals. Fine looking bike. Have seen a few of the 650s for sale locally, but usually not on sale for very long.

Unusually Vague Request for tenders to supply 10 motorcycles to the Army. All th etender specifies is that basically it is to be a motorbike and:

    • 2.3 The motorcycle shall have a minimum "fully laden" ground clearance of 130mm.

    • Design/Construction
    • 4.1 A large seat providing an upright riding position shall be fitted.
    • 4.2 Full length mudguards both front and rear shall be fitted.
    • 4.3 Two rear view mirrors shall be fitted. Mirrors shall have a large reflective area.
    • 4.4 Mirrors should be suitably positioned so as to allow for minimum movement of the riders head/eyes.
    • 4.5 Spring-loaded non-slip footrests for rider shall be fitted. Passenger footrests if fitted shall be folding type.
    • 4.6 A centre/side stand to be fitted
    • 5. Fuel
    • 5.1 The motorcycle will have a minimum fuel capacity of 10ltrs incorporating a reserve capacity.
    • 6. Transmission
    • 6.1 A manually operated five (5) or six (6) speed gearbox with positive gear change.
    • 7. SteerinelSuspension
    • 7.1 Front suspension shall be telescopic fork type.
    • 7.2 Rear suspension shall be monoshock type with adjustable preloader & adjustable damping.
    • 8. Brakes
    • 8.1 The motorcycle will be fitted with a modern braking system.
    • 8.2 Hydraulic disc brakes to be fitted to the front and disc or drum brakes to be fitted to the rear.
    • 8.3 Asbestos free components shall be utilised throughout.
    • 9. Wheels and Tyres
    • 9.1 Wheels will be easily removed & refitted with the onboard tool kit.
    • 9.2 Tyres will be available commercially and offer optimum road holding in all weather conditions.
    • 10. Electrical
    • 10.1 The electrical system shall be 12v DC incorporating full road lighting and direction indicators.
    • 10.2 Electrical suppression shall be in accordance with relevant ED Directives and will allow for clear radio communications.
    • 10.3 Key operated ignition switch and ignition kill switch will be fitted.
    • 10.4 Electric Start to be fitted.
    • 10.5 Illuminated speedometer with odometer and trip recorder graduated in km/hr will be fitted.
    • 10.6 Sealed/non spill battery with a capacity of not less than 8 amps/per hr to be fitted.
    • 11. Colour
    • 11.1 To be discussed with winning
      tenderer. (Manufacturers Colour)
That narrows it down to almost every type of conventional road motorcycle on the market, except certain BMW types.
    Very confusing.

    Good idea.
That explains why there was no mention of fairings or windscreens. However, no mention of stabilisers either

But what was wrong with using older army motorcycles, as was the case in the past?

I just put down a deposit on an ex 2 Cav Deauville. 98D reg, of course, only 14000km on the clock, and as spotless as a second hand bike can be without a major respray.

    Under €3000.

Unlikely as it's a foreign Reg, possible that it was part of the assessment process that led to the purchase of the Pajeros
