  • Royal Navy Cuts

Now that the Royal navy are scaling down there frigate fleet. There will be anumber of there fleet for sale in the near future. What would the possibility of the Irish Naby purchasing a couple of the Ex RN frigates. I think they are in the P23 class.

The NS couldn't crew even one of those frigates.

The Single Role Mine hunters are ok tho' - but would you want such a unadaptable vessel?

It seems the New RN will be equipped with smaller vessels too, when the Type 23 frigate is replaced with a combination of 10 Frigates of 5000 tonnes and 10 corvettes of 2000 tonnes. The most concerning thing about the defence cuts is that the UK government expects the forces to continue with its current level of commitment worldwide, with resources stretched to the max.

Anyone see the battle of the bulge analogy?

FTD hums "Rule Britannia, Britannian Rules the Waves, Britons never never never shall be slaves" in a disheartened fashion after reading the naval cuts.

Role on the Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth (they should name the Prince Charles the Ark Royal though), we really need those bloody carriers.

Carriers Need escorts. They also need air superiority. If the cuts continue, neither of these will be available to the RN. The trend of leasing ships, like the River Class may be seen more and more in the future. It has been suggested that the sponsorship of assets by private companies may be considered.
And we thought we had it bad.
The way things are going,we will have a similar number of ships to the RN in a matter of years....and maybe more deals like the Peacock steal will help us get there..

Yeah, I know thats the big problem, the escorts.By the time you put together, say, two of the new AD ship, a couple of submarines, resupply vessel, and few more vessels youll basically end with two pseudo CBGs and maybe agroup based around HMS Ocean.AD defence around the carriers is currently out the window with the imminent retirement of the Sea Harrier with the new GR7 and GR9 Harriers inadequet for that role. The JSF will be little better if it comes face to face with MiG29 or Su30s etc.The size of the carriers will probably be unsuitable for the proposed navalised Typhoon or an unlikely purchased of Rafael Ns or Hornets. It'll basically be a platform for support naval landings

As the type 23 was envisaged as a "lean manned ship" there no reason why the INS could'nt operate one, this assumes that there would be a decent injection of cash into training facilities, the type 22 would be pushing it a little but would be worth it IMHO.

the current role of the NS has no requirement for such vessels and would be a huge drain on resources if any such role was envisaged. We could however use the new river class and maybe a few sweepers.

As far as I know the Dept of Defence have decided on a 'no secondhand equipment' policy for the future, which is a pity as we probally could do with a few of the smaller sub frigate size units. I do not think we need frigates, and we were offerd ex-RN frigates before, during one of tatchers wholesale force-butchering exercises.
It is not a realistic option for us to operate them, considering the present amount of people willing to serve in the NS, which seems to be very small.

Yeah, I was watchin BBC News 24 when I wrote that, must have been something about the royals at the time, my apologies.Still, one should be named after one of the more historic vessels such as HMS Hood (a RN flagship at one point and worthy of being honoured with a new ship named in her honour) or as the new HMS Ark Royal.HMS Prince of Wales (sunk in air attack with little time in service or action) didn't have the finest record in World War 2 though admitedly the Ark Royal (torpedoed and sunk near Gibraltar) didn't fair much better at the time.

They should go along the lines of American carriers. Name them after famous politicians like Churchill, or continue the trend of names like Invincible and illustrious afterall the Hood wasn`t exactly the greatest warship ever made.10 minutes and 1 shell from the Bismarck was all it took.

Not everyone in the US is happy with the current model of naming the carriers after politicans. Former great carrier names are now on cruisers - Ticonderoga, Yorktown, Antietem, Valley Forge.....
