    INFANTRY ASSAULT BRIDGE

The Director of Engineering has a requirement for 2 No. Infantry Bridges as part of the Corps of Engineers Equipment Procurement Programme. The bridge should provide a rapid gap crossing capability to enable fully equipped troops on foot to cross obstacles or gullies with spans of up to 20m. The equipment must be designed for use by military forces and preference will be given to equipment with a current NATO military equipment stock number in order to meet the Defence Force¿s requirements on interoperability of equipment. The equipment manufacturer must be accredited to IS 9001. The bridge should comply with the testing requirements of the Trilateral Design and Test Code for Military Bridging and Gap Crossing Equipment.
The manufacturer (not the supplier) of the equipment will be obliged to provide a complete set of their equipment and demonstrate its capabilities during a series of standard tests at the Military Engineering School, DFTC, or at a mutually agreed location, in advance of any tender being considered. Failure to comply with these conditions will result in any subsequent tender being rejected.

    REQUIRED EQUIPMENT CAPABILITIES

    1. General. The Infantry Bridge is to be capable of crossing both dry and wet gaps. Crossing of wet gaps is to be undertaken with the use of a launching float. The bridge should be manufactured from lightweight high tensile aluminium modular sections of less than 5m each in length. Each module must be transportable manually by two soldiers and weigh no more than approx. 60kg.

    2. Span. Each bridge set should provide a clear span in excess of 20m (using a launching float). For wet gap crossing the bridge set must also have the capability of extending to a span in excess of 40m.

    3. The free launching bridge length is to be approx. 16m.

    4. Construction of launching float. The float should be divided into watertight compartments to prevent sinking if punctured.

    5. Walkway. The bridge must be a minimum of 300mm wide. A permanent handrail must be provided with a clear railing width of 600mm at a height of at least 600mm. Walkway should be constructed of a serrated surface to reduce slipping.

    6. Crossing capacity. 40 personnel every 5 minutes. The bridge should accommodate 135kg per soldier, @ 5km/hr.

    7. Max caution load. 205kg (Casevac).

    8. Erection. The bridge must be capable of being constructed and installed manually without mechanical assistance. Coupling of bridging modules should be of simple swivel type lock without the need for specialist tools or equipment.

    9. Construction rate. The bridge should be designed so that the construction of a span in excess of 20m can be achieved in less than 10 minutes.

    10. Life cycle. The bridge should withstand 40,000 full load cycles without critical fracture, or equivalent, 10,600 load cycles with a safety factor of 3.81. The bridge should also have an overload safety factor of more than 2 in a Collapse Overload Test.

    Inventory. 2 No Assault Bridges

    Each bridge set is to comprise the following;

    a. Bridge modules for span in excess of 20m.

    b. 1No. roller block.

    c. 1No. swimmer

    d. 1No. transport frame

    e. 2No. stretcher adaptor

    f. 1 x set of anchoring ropes (as required).

    g. 1 x set of anchor systems (as required).
