I was there on sunday, keeping track. Its great to see it slowly dissolving. Even better to see the 3 east facing blocks showing themselves to the world again.

Great to see it. Hopefully the remainder will be gone by the open day, with just all the scrap from the building left to clean up then.

I haven't seen much activity at the slag heap though.

I havent seen the slag heap touched either, they'll probably leave it until last.

Taken from notices posted up around Cobh.

Demolition of two large buildings at the north end of the steelworks site will take place over several weeks from the beginning of August.

These buildings have been subject to extensive internal cleaning over many months and will now be taken down by a process of controlled collapse.
However, there may be a few occassions where loud rumbling noises will be heard. Residents should not be alarmed by the noise which will be short-lived as parts of the building collapse. There will also be some visible dust thrown up for short periods.

It is expected that these events will take place on weekdays (only), mainly during the afternoon.

There has been a steel mill of different types there since the beginning of the 1900s. There are paintings however of the island before the basin was built.

                  Steelworks Remediation

Over the last few months demolition activity has focussed on the former melt shop buildings, those most visible from across the water in Cobh. The most northerly unit, the baghouse, was first stripped of its filter bags and ducting and cleaned internally, then demolished using water sprays to dampen down residual dust. The filter bags, and the dust residue from demolition of the building and from cutting up of the ducting and fans, have been packaged for safe disposal.

Internal cleaning of the structures of the main melt shop buildings is complete and these buildings are currently being stripped of their remaining fixtures. The caster tower has been demolished and the arc furnace removed, as has the scrap crane to the east of the buildings.

It is intended that these two large buildings will be demolished by a process of controlled collapse which involves selective cutting of steelwork to weaken the structure, after which the columns will be pulled out by wire rope and chains attached to powerful excavators. The east building will be collapsed bay by bay. Once this building has been removed and cleared, the taller furnace building will be collapsed as a unit towards the east, thereby minimizing the possibility of damage to the stone buildings to the west which are National Monuments.

The contractor intends to demolish these buildings over several weeks from early August into September. During this work there will be a few unavoidable but short-lived instances of noise and dust over the site. The noise should not be construed as a sign of any accident or mishap. The dust will be controlled as far as possible by pre-wetting and selection of weather conditions. Dust monitors on and around Haulbowline will be operating as normal.

Removal of asbestos is largely complete. Items assembled for safe disposal include gaskets, floor tiles and fire retardant from underground cable ducts. The dust collected during cleaning of the melt shop buildings is now expected to be shipped out to the continent for disposal sometime in late August or September. Once these materials have been despatched, peripheral stores buildings can be demolished. The only other major items to be addressed are the dockside cranes and the stack. It is anticipated that demolition of all steel structures will be completed in the autumn.

                    • Apparently there used to be a wooden walkway across and up until thirty years ago you could still see the original supports sticking out of the water.

Yeah, they had a wood causeway there up to about 1901. If Mc Dowell gets his way, they'll be building another one to the prison at Spike.

It hasn't changed dramatically since McCarthys photos, they are cleaning up the remains of the last building to fall to prepare space for the final large section.

Had a look already was just wondering if they had knocked the last section yet. Been away for the past couple of weeks so i was surprised to see how much they had done to the Steel.

                                Thanks for that Goldie F.
