So what would we prefer, massive landfills of rotting waste, or smaller, more controlled (by virtue of the contents) ash landfills?

Oh I'm not denying they aren't without their problems (oh and I'm not a NIMBY, if there's one in an industrial area of Dublin no problem, provided they have everything researched and proper plans for ash disposal in place BEFORE construction begins). I don't think people should be so quick to write off incinerators as they are. It's like people hearing the word nuclear - knee jerk reaction.
HOWEVER, Haulbowline (or anywhere in cork harbour tbh, I'd rather see it in dublin docklands) seems like a crackpot place to put itIs God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

T.P. as you have pointed out no-one seems to want it (same could be said for one in Dublin) but what the people want does not seem to count for much
Remember seeing a leaflet showing Dublin docklands with glass fronted office buildings all the way down to the sea (E.S.B. and all were gone) apparently Dublin docks were to move to around Balbriggen
This was a couple of years ago even before the glass bottle factory closedWhat do you mean abandon ship
Are they taking requests?

What I don't get is the requirement for TWO incinerators. Why not have one, waste arriving by boat into the docklands in dublin. If there's not enough waste, don't build two and double the problem. Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.

and then with the ash back on to the boat and bring it to dump in the big blue yonder and blame the americans on it , they seem to get blamed for everything else
If that happened I would not be in the least surprised but then I am a cynical old bollixWhat do you mean abandon ship

Toxic Island
Jan 09 Report by Friends of the Irish Environment
Toxic Island is the illustrated story of the industrial legacy of contamination at Haulbowline Island in Cork Harbour. Originally run by the State, the operation was sold to an Indian Company in 1996 which closed in 2001. The State lost a case against the liquidator seeking the required Landfill Closure in 2004 and in 2006 began the demolition and cleanup operations itself. The Minister for the Environment is seeking on behalf of the Government to determine the level of cleanup required to protect the environment but as such he is iudex in causa sua – a judge in his own cause - as he is a part of the body which also owns the site and must pay for the cleanup. It is a principle of natural justice that no person can judge a case in which he or she is a party. Regulation for this site should take place through the planning and waste licensing system and should include an environmental impact assessment as part of that process.

Toxic Island Briefing Document is a record of the documents that FIE accessed during its investigation of the industrial legacy of contamination at Haulbowline Island in Cork Harbour during 2008. Originally run by the State, the operation was sold to an Indian Company in 1996 which closed in 2001. The State lost a case against the liquidator seeking the required Landfill Closure in 2004 and in 2006 began the demolition and cleanup operations itself. These documents form the source of the illustrated story Toxic Island, also available from the FIE Library, but they are confidential drafts and should not be relied on.
